Dust-heavy bookshelves petrify
in the back room with lights out.
Cardboard coffins hold skeletons
of stories without backbones,
yellowed with time and peeling
in spots shaped like bruises
or bedsores.

They can be taken out, briefly
for a two hour walk to the copy
machine, but some crumble
when touched by light.

Words once so vital they were
written and preserved, read
and reread - they turn to dust
and linger like ghosts,
abridged to the musty
aroma of old paper.
I worked briefly in a geology library, and I got to catalog some of these tragic books... Coincidentally, I also volunteered in a nursing home. The result?

Thanks for viewing my work. :blowkiss:
