I am Toysoldier Thor. This is the name I go by within the 3D virtual world of SecondLife and even throughout the online communities that I participate in.
SecondLife is an amazing huge virtual world with 10's of thousands of lands and millions of residents. You exist as an avatar. From this world I take photographs of the amazing 3D creations around me. These photographs are not unlike photographs in real life where camera angles and lighting and all those aspects must be taken into consideration. Then I create photo art from these raw images.
I have also expanded my recent addiction of creating art (since April 2010 spawned in SL) to experiment with Real Life photography, 3D art, and mixed media art. As you see from my gallery, I have gotten into everything. I love to learn within each type of art.

Your words and interpretation of what you see in the art is pretty much dead on with what I was trying to convey and you said it with such elegance. The surrounding dark "ugliness" surrounding this bound couple are the obstacles, the infliction of potential suffering or almost overwhelming challenges that often swirl around us.
The representing male/female forms in my mind were a loving couple of some nature or circumstance (marriage, common-law, etc.) that bring their own efforts and talents to the relationship and yet work as one in the goal to "swim" through life's struggles - what ever they are. But your vision of it being humanity as a whole working to overcome struggles is an awesome extension of interpretation that is truly as valid.
Strangely, and its hard to put this in words, the bound couple each have one arm to assist the couple as a whole. What does this mean? Well often its easier in life to be given both arms and swim alone because you are allowed to be more agile and not require consensus in your desired goals.
As a bound couple, this lack of agility has its disadvantages in overcoming obstacles in life as you cannot just think or act to serve yourself. So that is why each in this couple is only represented to stroke with 1 limb even though most humans have two limbs. Each gives up something to become one in life and they both learn to stroke / swim in unison to meet their combined goal.
The advantage of a couple over an individual is that the individual is strong and more agile until he/she loses the ability to swim - this is when the couple's disadvantage becomes its strength.
