Popsicle Series - Anna by toxicness Popsicle Series - Anna by toxicness
One painting of a series of three I did this past semester

The series is three portraits of people I know with popsicles, I wanted it to be kind of popy but photo realistic...

Well, this painting came out photorealistic, the other two I decided to be more painterly but I think I will continue to work on them so they have greater detail...

This painting is my pride and joy out of the series, I spent a VERY long time on it and I felt like I got a lot out of it...this is my first completed oil painting and my first real attempt at photo realism  so I think I learned a lot

oil paint on canvas, 22x18

close ups...[link]

p.s. sorry for the poor documentation

That popsicle looks so good. I like the painting too, painting must take longer than painting in photoshop and all.

Wonderful work!! :D

..I was just wondering how you got that amazing blonde hair!! Technique? Colours??

toxicness Featured By Owner Jan 14, 2010
color is all relative and blonde hair is tricky because its a warm color with cool undertones, so depending on what color is next to the hair will affect which pigments you want to use to paint it.
it also depends on what shade of blonde
but for a platnium blonde like this stay with earth tones and not bright colors - yellow ochre, van dyke brown, and raw nutrals and some cool pigments are good. also notice that the hot pink background makes the hair look more cool-but if that background was blue the hair would look really warm. Depending on what color you place next to a "grey" color will shift it one way or another, so just experiment with your color shifts and you'll figure out what you need eventually

This is so amazing :) I love the way you shaded-- with different colors rather than just a darker shade of the base color (especially on the shirt where there is a little bit of pink highlights and green shading).

This one is my favourite of the three. :]
The hand is gorgeouss.
The reflection in the glasses is a really nice touch.
I'm not sure why, but the forehead looks a bit off. Maybe a bit flattened. But I don't know if that's true or if my anatomy is totally off, haha.
The lips seem a little weird to me as well. It looks like they should be closer to the colour of the popsicle seeing as they are on it.

Anyway.
This painting is beautiful and your talent is definitely something to be jealous of. :]

If I'd created this picture as a photograph I'd be pleased with the pose, colours and expression (seems as though she's captured just as she was distracted by something out of shot). And you've achieved all that with a painting!!!

this is fantastic - i love the colours, and the way the light has been captured
although I'm not sure this is quite photorealism yet - but by the looks of it, I'm sure you'll get there! :D
