hallowed ground
Heaven is not a place for
wanderers, witch-talkers,
women with words
between our teeth--
we purveyors of sinister
magic, we perpetrators
of wicked misdeeds.
we who are muck and mire
and marrow,
stuck hollow to the soil beneath
our feet--
we whose blood bubbles thick,
arcane, and dark.
we with candlewick tongues.
we with cauldron hearts.
ours are the whispers
that seethe in the streets;
ours are the fires
and the sinkings of stones;
ours the desires
that brew and that breed;
ours the rebellions,
ours what we've sown.
ours are the murmurs
that churn in the dark;
ours the disquiet
and ours the alarms;
ours the awakenings
in glyph, lynch-pin,
rabbitfoot, lionheart,
we cultivate harm.
I have become enamoured
with pain.
with sickness and rot.
with the roilings of rage.
with things we can wield.
I have become enchanted
by sorrow.
by illness, unrest.
the things we can conjure.
the things we've worn best.
I am in love
with the magic that nestles
inside of my breast:

I spent a few joyful seconds today
clambering over a brief, steep hill
avoiding with anxious twists of my feet
so many small beds of flowers,
minuscule and white
like winking stars,
like life rising from verdant water,
because I loved them and I wanted them to live.
when I sat down at the top of
that small incline
enthroned in dirt, happy in the earth,
I traced with anxious twists of my hands
that slim delicate irregular gridwork,
those minuscule white scars
that I pressed
with sure fingers
into my skin
seven long years ago
because I loved myself and I wanted to live.

I’m newly
sweltering with love
for it,
that gore so
and hardy with life,
so purple and vivid
and livid
with it.
through its conduits
syrup-sweet and viscid.
a fixed violet strain
neither stain nor contagion
but the very innermost
of the thing—
the thick, dark,
sure roots of it.
the bits of it
that shoot and sprout.
the bits of it
I’ve tried to rout.
but blood will out.
and blood will out.
and blood will out
and out
and out.
:icontoxic-nebulae:toxic-nebulae 6 2
I woke up today
in a mood for salvation
to feed my cactus
a thin
of water
like a fastidious
or a begrudging lover—
to leverage a steady
amassing of days
into something
that could be
counted and weighed,
impotent augury,
a quick, careful
I feel like
a bundle a railroad ties
that are ready
and itching
to be laid out
quite straight.

I used to
more like the
than like the flame
my body
a candlewick
love a flicker
up my spine
not wanting
I’ve changed,
I think
and am not now
so unresisting
but still
it would be
to be
and not found

I know that there’s a full meal here
if I could just get my fingers in it—
already now I
halfway-feel it,
sticky with oil,
reeking of sweetness.
I know that there’s enough to sate me
if I could just get my tongue around it—
crack it open
like a yolk-glutted egg
and suck at its shell
‘til it yields me its juices.
there’s enough to slake desire in this
if I could once get in the thick of it.
I know that there’s a full meal here.
I’m deathly, sickly sure of it.
:icontoxic-nebulae:toxic-nebulae 5 0
there’s a devilish howl,
guttural chant
that would rise from my bowels
if it could—though it can’t!
there’s a wickedness waiting,
peculiar curse—
I would give fire to hating
if I durst, though I shan’t!
my tongue for
the mettle to spit out bile raw!
my kingdom for
the wherewithal to carry out my law!
:icontoxic-nebulae:toxic-nebulae 4 0
on losing a poem that I had just begun to write
the silly thing tottered off
when it was not yet fully formed!
it must have decided
that it liked itself rather better
as three quarters of a thought,
something that wasn’t quite
bound and finished off–
something entitled to scamper about
in its incompleteness
until it grew to a
mythological size.
that’ll teach you to trust
in the loyalty of things!
can’t even try to give something breath
lest it wander off
to spite you with its waywardness!

au revoir
when you left me
you left
bits of yourself behind, too:
at least the things
that lived on in my mind
and at least the way
that we said goodbye.
every kiss is an
airtight exchange,
holy covenant,
breathless promise.
at least the way
that we kissed, that time.
:icontoxic-nebulae:toxic-nebulae 11 0
you’ve bewitched me
so completely
that I listen closely
when we kiss
to see if I can’t hear or feel
an incantation

it must be nice
to know you’re wanted
oceans and oceans and oceans
power given over to you
even though you’re so remote.
control given over to you
by the twitch of my fingers,
by the itch of my throat.
:icontoxic-nebulae:toxic-nebulae 7 0
Troxler's fading
you’ve been my blind spot
for so long:
my optic nerve,
my artificial scotoma
and my filling-in phenomena
have accounted for you
and have discounted you
and have figured all of the world out
around you
but still I know you
and still I long for you.
:icontoxic-nebulae:toxic-nebulae 2 0
I’ve got a soul of lead
and a fist of iron
and a heart that hardens
much too easily
but I swear that there is such
gentleness within me
and I’ll swear it by the touch
of my teeth to your teeth
and I’ll swear it by the brush
of my hand to your cheek
and I’ll swear it and I’ll swear it
and I’ll swear it so earnestly
that you’ll have to believe me
and that will make it true.

It is not weakness
This journal is dedicated to the many beautiful people who also struggle with diseases of the mind, so wrongly dismissed and stigmatized. Depression, anxiety and other such conditions are as real as any other disease, even if they do not have easily diagnosed physical manifestations. That only makes it harder. People say it is "only" in your head but the pain of diseases they'd condone is also an interpretation of the brain. That is what pain is -- does it matter the cause? Depression is not weakness. Depression is not a choice. Depression is not something you need to just get over. If you suffer with it, know that you are not alone and there is help available. Do not let ignorant if "well-meaning" people tell you differently.

Hello! I am so sorry for being horrendously absent over the past two months, but my final uni exams are over and the crazy post-exam celebrations are winding down so I can finally be active here again!
As always, please send me your DLR suggestions via a note, more info on that here: DLR Swing Admin
Also, here are a few pics from May Week (which is in June, typical Cambridge) which is basically a week of crazy ott parties that go on till 5 am and include things like comedians, musicians, hot air balloons, dodgems, a lot of food, a lot of alcohol and very sore feet - I went to two May Balls and two June Events this week and am now terrifically tired and also still star-struck haha

A Poetry Feature of the Romantical Variety
Feeling romantic--okay, when am I not, but still--so I thought I'd do something different. I may bring back my From the Treasure Chest series ... I may not. We'll see. There're lots of changes taking place in the lit community right now, and I sense that, though I've personally enjoyed putting those features together, they may not be meeting my readers' needs or interests as I'd hoped previously. And, I mean, that's okay; that just means I need to adjust my sails.
"But Mel, you doof, Valentine's Day is just around the corner. Why couldn't you wait to post this 'til then?" To put it simply, I haven't the faintest idea. I felt inspired, so it happened.
I have treasured many a love poem here on dA, but I chose these thirteen because in this order they kind of remind me of Jordan's and my story. One of them is even Jordan's, from a long, loooong time ago. Also, the reason I chose thirteen poems for the line-up, though I didn't necessarily plan it this way, is because our

i never make the same mistake,
except when i do.
i crossed the street with my eyes closed
and hoped to hear the siren,
not the screeching of tires
nor the sighing
of my last loved breath
being violently reft,
nor the screams
of the ones
i have left.
i will write a book
on how to dig up a road full of gold
with broken fingers,
how to uproot an ocean
then bury yourself beneath it,
how to live with a cross
that you nailed.
i am better
for having known you.
i am more aware
of my human
i am seeing
that my hands don't weave,
they knot.
i am worse
than i thought.
i never make the same mistake,
except when i do.
i feel my body
and two eyes
bite my tongue
in twain
and chew nails
i swear i fought
as well as i knew how;
i'll wear these mirror shards
from now
to armageddon.
i shook my hollow bones
at passages leaden,
filled my lungs with
dark liquid,
asked reefs to skin;
but look, i am charybdis
and i am coming around again
and i am loud enough

toxic-nebulae's Profile Picture
Artist | Student | Literature
United States
here! :…

it's called wanderers, witch-talkers, and it explores themes of European and Moroccan witchcraft, folklore, superstition, and mythology through poems about love, loss, culture, mental illness, disability, and race. it contains a whole bunch of new, never-before-seen poems, plus old ones that have been reworked, expanded, pared down, rewritten, or otherwise improved.

this book has changed covers, titles, and probably its entire rotation of poems at least twice during the years I've been sitting on it, but I really do feel that it represents my best work so far. I'm incredibly proud of it and I think that it's much, much better than it would have been had I released it two years ago. I'm so excited to share it with all of you and I hope that those of you who do buy it think that it was worth the wait.

I want to thank everyone who's followed and supported me over the years. your encouragement really does mean the world to me
