Tales from the Great Mountain~Tales from the Great Mountain~
The Waterfall of the Nine Heavens sparkled in the morning sun as it flowed ceaselessly down over the mighty grey slopes of Youkai Mountain. Its waters fell past trees and dove under rickety wooden bridges to tumble into a deep, clear pool at the deepest end of Genbu Ravine.
The swampy valley stood still in the warm morning light; only the river snaking between the muddy banks and concrete quays was going anywhere in a hurry. The gentle roar of the hydroelectric dam was always there, joining the snores of a several hundred kappa to form the world’s most relaxing din. Most of the kappa would be snoozing until midday in their warm paddling-pools and communal swamps.
By contrast, the high slopes were a hive of motion. Flocks of tengu were steaming rice and grilling meat in the village square, warming their wings on the rooftops or soaring out over the forests. The printing presses were already clanking into action as Aya dragged Hatate
The Great Danmaku Festival~The Great Danmaku Festival~
Reimu squinted down at the mildly tea-stained map that dominated Kasen's queen-sized kotatsu. "Are you sure the old festival grounds are going to be big enough?"
Reclining on the straw mats behind her, Yukari laughed. "Come on, of course they will! We used to have some good times out in the forest, didn't we?"
"You bet we-" Kasen caught herself before she gave something personal away. "I, um, have no personal history with Yukari! No siree!"
"Of course you don't, silly," tittered Yukari. "You'd be on the horns of a dilemma if you did!"
Kasen's face whitened. She squeezed herself a little further under the heated table.
"Anyway," said Kanako firmly, "what are we doing for the catering?"
"Don't look at me," said Reimu destitutely.
"I... I'm not, of course." Kanako gave her a slightly pitying look. "The Moriya Shrine can provide plenty of rice. How about one cauldron of rice porridge, one of katemeshi and one with tender beef and pork? W
MooncakesThe full moon shone on Junko, Hectatia, and Clownpiece as they sat on an open field.
“Time for dessert!” Junko said. She opened a cloth bundle and revealed mooncakes. With a knife from her dress, she quartered a mooncake.
“Egg yolk,” Hectatia noticed. “You must have made those.”
Junko nodded. “You’re right. Here, have some.”
Clownpiece hesitated. “But, don’t these celebrate…”
“I know,” Junko replied, gesturing the two to take a piece. After they did, she grabbed another mooncake from the bundle.
Junko quickly ripped off the outer layer of the mooncake, crumbling each fragment. Soon, she was left with the exposed yolk. She inspected it, letting it roll between her hands. Slowly, she peeled off chunks of the yolk, crushing the layers between her fingers. Bit by bit, the yolk shrank until there was nothing left to peel. Junko smashed what little remained between the palms of her hands. She examined h

“WAKE ME UP INSIIIIIDE!”
“I CAN’T WAKE UP!”
“WAKE ME UP INSIIIIIDE!”
“S… Save me from the… I love you, Mima!” Unable to sing a moment longer, Marisa dropped her hair brush, pounced on Mima and squeezed her lovingly. “Gods, I’ve missed this… I’ve missed you so much!”
“Missed what? The terrible singing, me using your broom as a guitar?” giggled Mima. “Or maybe you miss the brush…”
“I missed all of it!” wailed Marisa. “I had the best childhood ever, thanks to you, and-and I never wanted it to end! And I’m s-so grateful. And stuff.”
“Oh, come on, don’t get all soppy on me! You know I would’ve done the same for any kid with huge inborn magical powers who came from an abusive household,” laughed Mima.
“Oh, Mima. I haven’t seen you
