Every staircase, even before leading anywhere, compels us to view the world from a different height; it is, first and foremost, a promise yet to be fulfilled.
Climbing or descending thus becomes a mental act even before it is a physical one. Internal staircases harbour silent passages, private thresholds, rooms that reveal themselves one step at a time. External staircases, exposed to light and open space, trace a line of desire, effort and anticipation through the air. It does not matter where they lead. What counts is the tension of moving forward, the rhythm of the steps, the distance between what we leave behind and what we cannot yet see.
