Description

The second season with Mike Scully as showrunner

NOTE: If there's no cons, then I'll not put Cons: None anymore, I will exclude the cons category.

Lard of the Dance
Pros:Krusty toy, Milhouse throught the episode, blind Ralph, Homer commenting on SVT's (squeakey voiced teen) freckled face, several lines, Marge's dance, Homer's face getting sucked in, Homer's eye popping, and the ending
Cons: Some of Lisa's plot
Superb episode; This episode isn't really the offical season 10 premiere. It premiered on August for some weird reason. I'll be frank...the lard subplot was better than Lisa's plot. Lisa's plot is decent but it's just your typical Lisa get neglected as if she has no friends which is rather tiring and not too fresh of a plot. Yeah...unfortunately, this episode isn't that fresh in plot because they both been used on the episode Lisa's Rival. But surprisingly, I liked episode a little better than Lisa's Rival. Also surprising that Lisa's rival from said episode spoke in this episode though I don't think that guest star from in it returned her role. I am not really too fond of the Alex character, she seems too weird. But it still had its moments especially whenever Milhouse appears. I enjoyed the subplot more since it was funnier.
Score: 9/10

The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace
Pros: News station segment, Homer's imagined funeral, video of past moments, "invent yourself some underpants," Homer punishing Bart and Lisa, Homer's inventions, Edison ghost, and Homer's reaction at the end
Perfect episode; This is the offical season 10 premiere.I really enjoyed this episode and I think that this will be John Swartzwelder's last episode that will be a regular classic considering what will be his next written episod. (I will declare if is the end of Swartzwelder's classic era on HSIKT.) Anyway, the plot for the episode will be typical for season 10 but it's really great and well done. Homer's obession with Thomas Edison was funny and I liked him trying to invent something. The funniest scene was the ending of act 1. Homer's characterization might be a little weird at times (and slightly jerkish in that one scene but it was funny instead of meanspirited) but I actually enjoyed it. Overall, with this episode, it proves that the classic era hasn't gone away. Who knows, maybe it will this season but I will not refer it as post-classic era seson though.
Score: 10/10

Bart the Mother
Pros: Homer burping like Barney, baseball attacking Homer, Homer yelling Bart/Milhouse, Troy McClure video, Homer falling off the basement over and over, & flying lizards
Perfect episode; While it's not as funny as the previous episode, I still refer it as a flawless episode. It had the last voice appearance from Phil Hartman (RIP) and after this episode, theyoffically retired his character.
Score: 10/10

Treehouse of Horror IX

9 (Steven Dean Moore)
Hell Toupee (Donick Cary)
Pros:
Cons: Very boring and the part of Homer in Snake's voice was stupid.
Bad Segment; Wow, this is another bad segment. I don't like the plot of Snake controlling Homer's hair cause it's definitely wacky. The difference is the segment didn't even made me laugh at all! The ending was stupid as well.
Score: 1/10

The Terror of Tiny Toon (Larry Doyle)
Pros: The whole plot of Bart and Lisa in the I and S show,
Cons: None
Segment; Anything with Itchy and Scratchy is gonna be very watchable. The funniest scene when they landed on a live action cooking show. So this is definitely my first time I rated a Scully era segment higher than a 7.
Score: 10/10

Starship Poopers (David S. Cohen)
Pros: Kang turns out to be Maggie's father (Homer's reaction to it), the story of Marge getting aducted by Kang and Kodos, the Jerry Springer scene, and Maggie talking like one of the aliens.
Cons: Boring beginning
Good Segment; Well, this was a really funny segment. I LOL several times especially the scenes with the bleeping. Maggie suddenly talking was hilarious as well and the same goes to Homer's reaction that Kang is Maggie's father.
Score: 9/10
Good Segment; Decent episode, which would have been higher if it weren't for the first segment being completely awful. I'm really serious, I never laughed at that segment at all. Thanks God the last two segment made it up. This one has a funny opening in a wacky typical Scully-era way. Overall, this episode made it a better than the previous TOH. (Also, the art style changed starting with this episode; it looks brighter)
Overall score: 7/10

When You Dish Upon a Star
Pros: Yogi Bear dream, Homer parking on Ned's head, Kirk getting shocked, "it's personal, he got our underpants"
Cons: Jerkass Homer throughout, Homer can't read, Homer telling the guys about the celebrities in Springfied, and that particular scene
Bad episode; Not a great way to end the 5F production (even though it's the 19th produced but it's the last one to aired). How in god's name was Richard Appel the writer of this? The same guy who wrote episodes that I really enjoyed went to a decline by the Scully era (his previous episode was decent but kinda boring). I hate when great writers like him has to write a disappointing last episode (for example, know that Dan Vebber disappointed me with his last American Dad episode). Honestly it contains problems like the line where Homer doesn't know how to read, the lack of interesting moments (this was a really boring episode in addition to being bad), Homer playing with the bra, and rushed ending. The two things that bothered me the most were the secrets of the three guest stars being revealed and the people wanted to see them and Homer throughout the episode. He's just so unbearable in this episode just like in Trash of the Titans but unlike that episode he didn't get his just desserts. Conclusively I'd rather each TOTT. This episode is just a promotions for the guest stars. BTW this episode actually started off hilarious with the Yogi Bear parody but then it become a borefest/atrocity.
Score: 3/10

Doh in the Wind
Pros: Homer trying to open the jar, Homer, Lenny, and Carl as graduates, Homer not feeling pain with the bee hives, flashback, "narc," Frisbees landing on the barn, the whole town feeling trippy,
Cons: A few bland moments in act 2 and 3
Great episode; Great episode with a very decent plot premise even though Homer's middle name is basically the letter "J" pronouncation so the revelation seems rather pointless. Plus I always thought it standed for Jay so I'm kinda suprised by this. Homer as a hippie was cool to watch. His characterization here is far from jerk and it's well used. My favorite part was definitly the trippy scenes.
Score: 8/10

Lisa Gets an A
Pros: Homer eating the foods quickly, Gavin's second appearance, Bart getting all the brownie, Homer actually making breakfast for Pinchey, Dash Dingo, Lisa's imagination of getting a 0, perodic table of Oscar Meyer, Supernintendo Chalmers, Otto as disguise, Homer eating Pinchey
Perfect episode; Definitely a classic episode. While I really liked the Lisa plot, the subplot is what made the episode amusing. All the scenes with Pinchey were the highlights but I was most amused at the very end when Homer mourned the loss of Pinchey and then eats it. It did had a classic Ralph line which references to Super Nintendo. All in all, one of season 10's best. Rather surprising for the writer himself since I didn't liked his previous couple episodes but it might be on par with the New York episode.
Score: 10/10

Homer Simpson in: Kidney Trouble
Pros: Robot scene, Moe's scene, Doctor Krusty, a car landing on Homer (well-deserved)
Cons: Random toilet humor, Homer not letting Abe go to the restroom, "blow up the hostipal" remark, Homer running away (twice), and the ending
Terrible episode; Well, here we are: the end of Swartzwelder's classic era was The Wizard odf Terrace Evergreen. This episode for me marks the start of the dark age of John Swartzwelder. The first minute was sort of funny. The Ghost Town part during most of act 1 was okay but barely funny except for the robots scene. However, it was kinda boring. The rest of the episode sucked except for the scene at Moe's, Doctor Krusty, and a car landing on Homer. Let me just rant on this episode. As a funny character Homer can be, he can be extremly unlikable and this episode proved it. He was as bad as he was throughout Trash of the Titans and When You Dish Upon a Star only worse. This is by far his worst role unless I seen a later episode with extreme Jerkass Homer level like this. We can all know why most of us (me included) hate this episode: Homer Simpson. He was not redeemable at all in this episode. He just came off as an ampathetic jerk who cares about himself and not his own dad. That part when he joined the sailor didn't help either and it was pointless. What frustrated me what when Homer ran away twice. Also a few of the stuff he said came off rather cold like telling Marge to blow up the hostipal. Marge accepted it which seems out of character for me. Looks like Flanderization is here to stay as this season since it wasn't a big problem in season 9 (it only popped out sparingly). I'm talking about Homer's flanderized self by the way. Most of the humor were lame especially with this random and literal potty humor which wasn't clever. Honestly, once it got the part where Homer get hit by a car, that where it make applaud just like in that once scene from the 200th episode. Only this time he deserved it for being a pussy. Overall, do not ever want to watch this episode again. I know I will see it again because of how Homer acted. The plot would beenpromising if Homer wasn't being such an obnoxious jerkass. But instead the plot was disjointed, the humorous scenes are childish, and the characterization (usually from Homer, Marge, and even Dr. Hibbert himself) are off. Avoid it please.
Score: 2/10

Mayored to the Mob
Pros: Titantic pardoy, scene with CBG, an argument causing a riot, Homer's raction to giving 20, Homer fainting, Yes Sir, Homer kissing Quimby, Mark Hamill's song (and Louie dancing)
Cons: Boring scenes
Great episode; A great episode though it's weak in some parts. Ron Hauge had been a weaker writer but this might his best episode. I liked Mark Hamill's appearance and he's probably one of my favorite self guest appearance on the show. He would later be familiar with voice acting mainly villains. I liked the mob plot at the last two and a half acts as it keep the episode interesting (despite a few boring moments).
Score:  8/10

Viva Ned Flanders
Pros: Car Wash worker speaks Spanish, Abe and Jasper hanging with girls, Welly/welly/welly, the "suicycle," security on the camera, Homer and Ned's reaction to getting married to two Vegas wives, the video of Homer and Ned getting married, chase scene
Cons: Boring moments and Ned's a bit of OOC
Great episode; Well, I still don't think the classic era isn't over yet once I see more weaer episode, this episode isn't really classic material, despite the fact the fact that David M Stern returned writing. I can see a marked difference on his scripts in this episode and his previous six episodes. This episode is wackier than his previous episodes due to being Scully era. It seems like he's aware of that. What I meant on the wacky part is that act 3 was very zany. The episode started off a little boring but once the main plot started, I was starting to enjoy it. I'd be honest, Ned was out of character here. He did acted like his old self here and it's probably the weaker Ned episodes at this point.  Homer is a little bit of a jerk but not that much. He still cracked me up here. The humor is what keep the episode from sucking though. I'm just glad that I didn't end up hating this episode unlike most people. It may not be the best but it's one of my guilty pleasure.
Score: 8/10

Wild Barts Can't Be Broken
Pros: Homer talking about the child's grave, isotopes, "Homer's night out," Nelson as Hibbert, the kids watching the movie, some of the embarassing secrets, the kids/adults song
Cons: see below
Great episode; This is gonna be a tough one to review. It's enjoyable but I do have a major flaw with it: Chief Wiggum banning the kids' curfew seem too much of a punishment and some of the humor were miss (and lackluster). The best part of the episode was the song for sure. Most episodes' highlights tend to be the song whenever there's one. Also most people claim this to be the best episode of the season but honestly it's far from the best.
Score: 8/10

Sunday, Cruddy Sunday
Pros: Bart drawing a graffiti, “I got some dog food,” talking through the cup, everyone having their stomach grows and then shrinks, Lenny taking off Rev. Lovejoy’s shirt, Homer getting kicked, Wiggum getting hit by the celldoor, and the meta joke at the end
Cons: Homer’s call to Lenny, the guys getting held in prison, and a few boring moments
Great episode; Although I don’t follow Super Bowl in general since I’m not a sports person, I actually enjoyed this. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely great. I think this episode is absolutely overhated. I don’t see anything bad about it. Plus, I don’t see any wacky stuffs going on here so that’s probably why I might be on the minority liking this episode. Ironically I don’t care about Super Bowl but I was interested on the main plot. The subplot was okay but it’s nothing special. Also the episode kinda started boring except a couple of chuckles. So, all in all, despite what people say about this episode, it’s not that bad nor it’s cruddy. Homer and Ned’s Hail Mary Pass, that might be another story, if I think it’s bad. I guess this should one of my unpopular opinions and one of my guilty pleasures as well.
Score: 8/10

Homer to the Max
Pros: Ned with a different voice, fatter Homer Simpsons (actor), everyone at Springfield mocking about it, Homer talking about Debbie Pinson,
Cons: Homer was kind of annoying, some boring moments
OK episode; IMO, this is the first average scored of the season. Well, Swartzwelder's writing had already decline after Kidney Trouble for sure. Still, nothing bad compared to that episode. The story was decent but Homer was kinda annoying at times and there's some boring moments. I was amused at everyone making fun of Homer in the first half because there's a character made after him. That was probably the best part of the episode.
Score: 6/10

I'm with Cupid
Pros: Homer's "fairy tale," Homer trying to know what Apu and Manjula are saying, Apu as a chocolate statue, Ned getting kicked out,
Cons: Same reason as previous APu episode.
Decent episode; Another decent Apu episode. My flaws are the same reason as the previous Apu episode: it's kinda boring. Act 3 was interesting though. Overall, not really the best Valentine's Day episode but I got some chuckles.
Score: 7/10

Marge Simpson in: Screaming Yellow Honkers
Pros: Graduation song, Willie's standup comedy, everyone reaction to Edna's act, Marge's road rage, video about road rage, Agnes attacking the bear (Eddie), the animals throwing a fit
episode; David M Stern's last episode; Viva Ned Flanders had a wacky third act and this episode had it as well. But surpringsly, this episode was better than that episode. Even for a Marge episode, it was pretty hilarious. Especially whenever Marge has a road rage and the animals getting angry. So, depsite that the writer is from someone from seasons 2-4, he managed to made it wacky in a perfect way. All in all, one of the most wackiest Scully era episode. I had no problems with this episode whatsoever.
Score: 10/10

Make Room for Lisa
Pros: The beginning, the baby monitor scene, the tank scene
Cons: Homer groaning,  most of the beginning
Mediocre episode; I'd be honest, this episode was terrible at first but once it got halfway through it starts to has some funny moments chiefly in the subplot where Marge listens to the baby monitor. Those scenes saved the episode from being unbearable. In fact, the episode isn't really that half-bad. The bad stuff was Homer though. He was very annoying in the first half but he does redeem himself for the third act. The third act is another reason why the episode got a higher score and i think the episode gotten better after they stop making Lisa's room as he plot device. But still, it's overall mediocre at best due to the terrible beginning (sans that very first moment, it was kinda funny). At least it ended on a heartwarming note.
Score: 5/10

Maximum Homerdrive
Pros: The scene with Mr. Burns, Heimlich machine, the steak eating contest, "it ate everybody stupid," and few others
Cons: Some boring moments, Homer trying run over an old lady
OK episode; Well...I think the classic era is offically over now since I think the tenth season is all over the place with its quality. I'm surprised I only seen a couple of bad episodes in this season at this point. Usually I would be excepting more than that but look like I might as well still call season 10 a classic era season even though it already enough for John Swartzwelder. Anyway, I thought this was an okay episode. The storyline is so so but it kept me interested with the plot. Homer came off as a jerk only in a couple scenes but other than that he's not that bad here. The subplot was so so as well so looks like I liked the two plots equally. In conclusion, okay season 10 episode and despite the reception it got, I don't really think it's bad...just not great but in the middle.
Score: 6/10

Simpsons Bible Stories
1st segment
Pros: Ned as God, Snake literally a serpent, the pig
Cons: It's boring but nothing too bad
score: 7/10
2nd segment
Pros: The cruel whips, "Do you think we could ever be more than just friends?",
Cons:
score: 7/10
3rd segment
Pros: Homer's brief dream, talking Santa's Little Helper, gravestone hitting Nelson,
Cons:
score: 8/10
Good episode; This was a decent start for the three segment episode. It's not really my cup of tea, but I was entertained by the characters as biblical characters. The best segment was obviously from Matt Selman. While Tim Long had a good start to his writing career on the show (he's decent in the Scully era). I didn't laughed much here though.
Score: 7/10

Mom and Pop Art
Pros: BBQ Pit Kit video, Homer failing to make a BBQ pit kit, Wiggum calling Homer fidderent names, Lisa and Bart making Homer mad in prder to make art, Homer sketching Lenny and Carl, Matt Groening meta reference, Homer obessed with the Campbell soup  painting, Homer's dream, Homer and Bart getting rid of mats, etc.
Perfect episode; Surprise, surorise, I find this episode to be funnier than Lisa Gets an A to be honest. While the plot isn't anything new (it's like Brush with Greatness but with Homer doing art; plus, it's another episode where Homer gets a job), expect this to in my top 5 favorite episode of the season. All of Homer's rage throughout the episode were hilarious. The last few minutes was weird for Homer having to flood the city but it didn't bugged me. Altogether, this makes a flawless episode and it's an excellent return of Al Jean (he took a hitatus in writing) in which he stayed ever since (he left for a brief season).
Score: 10/10

The Old Man and the C Student
Pros: The first scene, Homer taping Snowballs 2, childern's future, Bart's standup comedy, Bart messing with Abe, Hans getting kicked out, Skinner punching Homer, the springs injusrying Lenny and Moe (until they have them together), the spring causing the grill to go on fire, and a few others
Cons: Some of Bart/Lisa plot, the ending result of the spring eye injury
Decent episode; Decent writing debut from the wife of Mike Scully. Her writing is not bad but it feels uninspired at times. There were some great jokes. I laughed at the eye spring injury the most but sadly it ended on a bad note as Lenny and Moe's eye got stuck together and it's a little too much. I'm not too fond of the Bart/Lisa plot that much as it kinda boring but some of the elderies provided some funny lines. The spring subplot was better and funnier imo.
Score: 7/10

Monty Can't Buy Me Love
Pros: The first scene (particualr with Moe), CBG's line about underwater, Homer playing a game
Cons: Homer scratching his butt on public, Lenny getting hit by a coin, the KBBL radio scene, Burns' characterization
Bad episode; On an interesting note, we see that longer circus couch gag again since I forgot...really probably since a clipshow episode. Kinda jarring to see it used here since it still has the season 4 artstyle. But the art style looks a little off for a season 10 since the clouds are designed like in the older episodes. Anyway, I didn't enjoyed this episode. I thought it was not up to par, The writing seems very off, the characterization are terrible, and the humor is flat. Looks like those will Swartzwelder's definition of writing for most of his remaining episodes he written during the Scully era. Homer to the Max and Maximum Homerdrive aren't that funny but at least the writing isn't that bad when compared to this. This is almost on par with Kidney Trouble except that it's slightly better and Homer was characterized better. But here, the characterization that came the most off was Burns. Throughout it, he acted all out of character and never cracked me up here. Maybe it's a sign of his Flanderization kicking in but if so, then looks like this is the start of flanderized Burns. He doesn't come off his old self at all. Lenny getting hit by a coin was too much for me, it was too gory. I didn't liked the KBBL radio scene at all. It was bothersome to watch and probably the most excurating scene of the episode. I wasn't really bothered by the Loch Ness Monster but it's a very ludcrious plot twist and I had no problem with third act plot twists so far (unless that changes). So altogether with failed humor, writing, and characterization, this episode itself just failed. Luckily a few moments redeemed it from being the worst episode of season 10.
Score: 3/10

They Saved Lisa's Brain
Pros: Nervous Carl, the dumb contest, another riot, Bart and Milhouse looking at Homer in underpants on the windows, Wiggum's appearance (joining the drunk guys, reaction to the group being mayor), sarcastic detrector, Stephen Hawking's appearance, the ending, etc.
Cons: Homer's subplot, a couple meh moments
Great episode; I enjoy the main plot more than the subplot to be honest. The main plot was very great and not that much dull moments. The subplot was meh at least but it had a few good moments. I liked Stephen Hawking's appearance in this episode and he kind of cracked me up. Overall, great episode that I don't really have any more to say.
Score: 8/10

Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo
Pros: Homer thinking Wired is weird, Willie's reaction when checking his bank account, Homer trying to rob Ned's stuffs, Monopoly, Homer speaking with a Jamaican accent, Bart using a device that makes the airplane go down, Homer breaking in the door, Homer taking a dump while the others watch, the family getting seizures (LOL), the sumo scene, Homer yelling D'oh in Japanese, King of the Hill reference, The Happy Smile Super Challenge Family Wish Show, Godzilla reference, and credits scene
Perfect episode; That was an awesome way to end season 10! I had lot of fun watching this episode. This might as well be the best traveling episode. I mean, I really enjoyed the Simpsons going on a trip to Australia and New York City but their trip to Japan has been a blast for me so I enjoyed that trip more than the other two I mentioned. Seriously...this episode was so freaking hilarious. It was just nonstop laugh out loud humor. Hell, while Lisa Gets an A and Mom and Pop Art are very funny episodes, I just found myself the funniest episode of season 10 and maybe even whole Scully era. Speaking of that, when I rank all the Scully era episodes one day don't surprised if you see this on my top 5 favorite episode showran by Scully. Watch it (unless you're Japanese American/have seizures problems) and you'll be laughing out loud. I laughed the hardest at that seizure scene since I'm aware of the reference we all know it came from. The game show plot was awesome to watch during it there's was a King of the Hill reference. All in all, one of the funniest episode of the Simpsons of all time. Best.season.10.episode.ever. Excellent job, writers.
Score: 10/10

My Thoughts on Season 10
Well...to be honest, season 10 is considered to be part of the classic era in my humble opinions. This is due to episodes like Lisa Gets an A, Mom and Pop Art, and Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo being so LOL worthy that felt like you're watching a season 3/4 episode. Now I do have some slight complaints for the season though. Season 10 is when the writing got a little worse. It is evident by watching all of Swartzwelder episodes in this season but The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace (it's due to being a season 9 heldover episode so that doesn't count). His writing starts to decline here and I don't blame people since  it's already his 40th script by the time it happens. The writing is still good but you can tell there's some lame jokes from time to time. Plus, the violence starts to get a bit empasized in this season and gore starts to show up a little more. As for characterization, it gets slightly worse as Flanderization is starting to kick in very soon but not too major of a issuse. The characters are still in their selves but let's look at some characterizations. Homer starts to show more signs of selfishness and When You Dish Upon a Star, Kidney Trouble and Make Room for Lisa proved it. However like season 9 you will be kinda surprised that his Jerkass behavior rarely show up regularly. It does pops out in some episode but only those three episode had Homer in full Jerkass force. Bart however starts to become alittle less funny here. His moments of funnyness are reducing a tad bit. Marge and Lisa are me but not too bad. Burns however starts to become less evil and that kinda affects my view of the character. We all love evil Burns becuse it's amusing. He still cracked me up in the season but Monty Can't Love Me Love, he never did due to his OOCness. Lenny and Carl do start to get a little goofier than they did in the past seasons. As the other characters, they'reusually not affect that much. For the humor, it's still enjoyable to laugh at. Like I said, there are three top5 worth episodes that are so funny so the humor hadn't really gotten stupider. I will admit this, this when the season started getting wackier. The third act start to get weirder especially with the two David M Stern's episode. Depsite people's scorn against this, I actually don't mind the wackiness. Same thing with most episodes here except for a few weaker than average episodes. All in all, a rather surprising enjoyable season for Mike Scully as showrunner. Let's see if season 11 holds up.

Ranking from BEST to WOST
1. Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo
2. Lisa Gets an A

17 Positives
6 perfect
1 superb
6 great
4 good

3 Neutrals
2 Okay
1 mediocre

3 negatives
2 bad
1 terrible

Animation: It's a tad better but not saying much. 8/10
Writing: Become more wackier in structure. The writing is still almost the same as season 9. 8/10
Characters: They're still likable most of the time. But when they're unlikable, it's abysmal. 8/10
Enjoyment: Season 10 is still a classic in my book. I recommended watching most of this season without getting to the flaws. 9/10
Humor: It is a lot more wackier than most season 9 episodes. Especially the funniest episodes. 10/10 if done right, 9/10 when falls flat
Art: Starting with TOH 9, the color palette starts to brighten. While Marge's hair is a little too bright, I really loved the brightness to the color. 10/10
Drama/Emotion:The only bad thing I should say about season 10. It's almost gone thanks to Kidney Trouble for having a concept that should been heartwarming but ended up being the opposite of that. Also it's confusing in Make Room for Lisa even if the ending was a happy one. 3/10 (won't affect my grade)
Voice Acting: More or less than same in season 10. Also I should say that the celebrity guests are still enjoyable. 8/10

As of late, I've been thinking that this season would've been perfect to end the show. So that means.....

Barney would remain an alcoholic.

Maude, Mona, Fat, Alice and Nibbles would still be alive.

Apu wouldn't have had countless children.
