Dexter and Dee Dee doodle by Toonicorn Dexter and Dee Dee doodle by Toonicorn
SOOOOO I've been watching "Dexter's Laboratory" on Netflix, and taken rather a fancy to it. What fascinates me about the show is that although battling siblings Dexter and Dee Dee go on these impossible high-fantasy adventures, they nonetheless possess an authenticity few other toon children can claim. In the earlier seasons, at least,  they were endearingly human, less stylized than in the seasons that followed, and in my opinion, much funnier and much more convincing as siblings.

To sum up their personas as I see them: Dee Dee is the force of chaotic good in Dexter's life, a life he primarily spends in the chilly isolation of his lab, where she invades at will and literally, figuratively and emotionally pushes his buttons, an act that almost invariably ends in disaster. Because of Dee Dee's destructive intrusions, one does at times feel sorry for Dexter, but for my part, my sympathy is tempered by the fact that Dexter is, well, kind of a jerk. He's short-tempered, self-absorbed, self-satisfied, vainglorious, obsessive, misogynistic, overly-ambitious, a terrible show-off, and generally not much fun to be around, which is one reason why he's virtually friendless. He does, however, have two saving graces: he is, at least to some extent, aware of his flaws, and he does love his family - even, or perhaps especially, his big sister. And to Dee Dee's credit, it's not *too* hard to see why: true, she is spastic and oblivious, but she is also radiant, outgoing, happy, imaginative, attractive, creative and athletic. Unlike her anti-social little brother, she is popular at school. Given all she's got going for her, one wonders why she bothers with Dexter at all. Yet, in spite of their differences, these two love each other. Genndy Tartakovsky, their creator, took pains to make that clear. In that way, they're the precursors of the free-spirited Mabel and more cerebral Dipper in the excellent toon "Gravity Falls". The difference between them  is that Dipper and Mabel have made peace with each other. Dexter and Dee Dee have not quite reached that point, but given Dee Dee's persistence and Dexter's soft spot, one senses that that day is not long in coming.

My favorite "Dexter's Laboratory" episode? "Filet of Soul", in which Dexter and Dee Dee run all over their house in the dead of night trying to escape the ghost of their dead (and unflushed) goldfish. Sheer freaking genius.

So anyway, I doodled this sketch of them, which was fun and great practice for me in my ongoing attempts to master Xara. Hope you like!

I love seeing appreciation for their dynamic (and recognition that Dexter is kind of a wad). This show is really good at using foil characters.

Very nice pic, especially the way you drew Dee Dee.  She sure looks cute.  I also like how realistic (well, more so than in the show) you made their hair.  So, I'd like to ask, is it all right that I draw their hair this way?  Because I, myself, like to draw my human characters more realistically while still being true to their cartoon style.

Thank you! Glad you liked it!

I dropped by your page, and I really like Lemonhead and Lollipup, especially the drawing where Lemonhead is reading a book of Poe. They look like funny and interesting characters. I hope you keep developing them. :)

Yeah, it really is a show.

To this day it is my absolute favorite cartoon of all time.  If it weren't for Dexter's Lab, I probably wouldn't ever want to draw.

Brilliant. Dexter and Dee Dee are one reason we decided to create Running of the Leaves as an animation convention. Cartoons like these inspire and entertain people of all ages, and deserve to be remembered.

An interesting note on Gravity Falls--none of us made the connection until you pointed it out.
