This is a great piece.  Very evocative.
Relying only the backside of the subject is not commonly done, and by successfully doing so, demonstrates the courage and maturity of the artist.
Here, the emotion plays through granting the observer full view, and indeed, imbeds the symbolism of finality.

Warm clothing or no, even from the back, you can see the sweat beading across his brow.
