Moon Knight’s been my favorite Marvel character since I first came upon him in 1979. My favorite.
His rogues gallery however, was a little thin. Bushman ? Midnight Man? Stained Glass Scarlet? Morpheus? I dunno…none of them were over the top villains for me. A hero is only as good as his villains. Which makes me have little interest in seeing’ what Marvel has Marc Spector up to in the last 20 years. I mostly just look at the old Moench/Sienkiewicz run when I need a MK fix.
Over the years tho, they played off the whole Egyptian thing way too much and lost sight of what he originally was….a bad ass soldier hired to beat up a werewolf. And given a suit to do just that.
But hey …can’t someone they just strip the character down and make a story about what makes him great? He’s nuts. What a cool concept. A schizophrenic nut in a superhero costume. And why do I have to wait for someone? I can do it.
So I came up with a 12 issue story where we get to see both the Egyptian roots intertwined with the mercenary who gets paid to take down the Werewolf by Night. A Indiana Jones take on Marc Spector where he’s trying to find the Ankh of Khonshu, all while several interested parties are doing the same thing….the Committee….the Bushman Foundation….the Midnight Man…even world famous archeologists Dr. Arlaune and his daughter Marlene… all for different reasons.
The search leads to the origins of the Moon Knight character, in his original costume like it was originally conceived by artist Don Perlin, A story that sees MK come face to face with some great Marvel characters like Cloak and Dagger, the Punisher, Madcap, and the Heroes for Hire; Power Man and Iron Fist. I beefed up some of his baddies too and have a direction I’m going with Bushman, his main antagonist. Stained Glass Scarlet and Morpheus show up too. I even have a brief appearance by later incarnation, Mr. Moon.
It was inspired by the old Spectacular Spider-man cartoon that was on 15 years ago or so. I thought that show was brilliant in taking old stories and concepts, staying true to them, but adding a fresh element when needed. Moon Knight doesn’t have the history Spidey does, but I can see a “year one” story all told month by month while making stops at landmark holidays to keep the story tight. I wanna do that with Moon Knight.
Since I’m a hobbyist and not even close to having anyone work on this, I decided I’d post some of my Moon Knight ideas and pages in a separate folder. maybe someday I’ll tell the whole story with its surprise twist ending. Who knows?
But here’s a start…an old sketch I worked up and finished of the four personalities that live in one head.
