Amazing Fantasy 15 cover REtRedd SpiderMan

I don’t want any of ya to think I won’t be posting free covers no more. I am seeing how a subscription tier works for the covers that take me a little more time.

This one took me about 4 hours give or take. The original is iconic and oft copied. Jack Kirby gets the shout out for another inspiring image.

But I never thought it a great piece of art. I think Kirby would agree. A piece that was slapped together for a comic that was gonna be cancelled. Why they abandoned Ditko’s original cover for this is beyond me.

Kirby never could get the feel for Spidey. It shows here. And the random bad guy on his hip looks too small and kinda pasted in. Like he was added later. The coloring looks slapped on quick. And, much to my embarrassment, I never realized those thick white lines on the original were speed lines. I always thought it was fog or smoke in the sky.

So I changed all those things and more. I wanted my Spider-Man looking more at the reader. And I swelled up the bad guy. And I made the bad guy the original burglar that got Spidey started. And my big white streak are in the sky.

I simplified and muted the background like I always do…just easier and faster. The background should always be just that…background.

I have some really cool pieces in my subscription tier too, and more going in. The next one is a Super Villian Team Up of Doom ruling over all of the marvel heroes. Issue 14. You won’t wanna miss it!
