Hello watercolorists !

It's been so long promised Panda Emoji-10 (Blush) [V1] ...now it's time :plotting:

To cook, to eat salty snacks? No!
Trash Dove Nope (not my art)

We will be using salt...but for painting.

In watercolors you can use lots of different materials like plastic, paper tissue and everyday items like water and you guessed it...SALT to make awesome textures.

For the salt technique in watercolor paintings you can use regular kitchen salt, sea salt or the special one made for watercolors from an art supply store.

See some examples of great use of the salt technique:

Pet Fish by ghostyheart   Alkonost [collab] by LualaDy   Calla by Riemea

Those Who Came From Mist by Sieskja   March Tale by natzufall

The THEME =D CHALLENGE for October / November is:
 SALTY
_______________________________

:alert: INSTRUCTIONS for entering our challenge:  :alert:

Create a watercolor painting by using THE SALT TECHNIQUE. So don't paint the salt, but use the actual salt to create a watercolor painting with it.

You can create anything you like (landscape, portrait, still life…). Just make sure the pattern created with salt is very good visible...the more the better. And please try to create an actual painting, not just a quick sketch. You have more than enough time to send your entry.

"Don't paint the salt" XDDD

Every time I try it I never can get it to work :panic:  (just wanted to make few papers with such "pattern" for my exploding boxes)

I don't know if you saw on my IG...I got a nice texture using salt, but the paper wasn't right and the salt didn't want to dry properly (I used a hair dryer, put on the radiator, nothing worked, after a while it again started to be wet)...I had to remove that part of the paper.

Usually you have to have the right amount of wetness of the color. It's a gut feeling...it can't be too wet (like a lake), but it has to have a shine. And it's better to sprinkle less salt then too much (or like me...who drops 1kg of salt with just 2 fingers :shakefist:
And it also depends on the color...blue, red are usually ok. It's a try and error thing. :B

For the slat you really have to practice and even if you do you can never now what the outcome will be. :B But that's also part of the fun. ;)

Hi, I have a problem with submittion, because I've exeeded the limit of 1 deviation per 30 days.
Am I allowed to participate in the competition?

Hello =D
No problem. Maybe you have previously submited one of your regular entries in this folder and now you can't anymore.

Only this AquaChallenge folder is limited to 1 per month (since you can make only 1 entry), but the other folders is open...so you can submit 1 per day as always. ;)

Many members just use the wrong folder (the contest folder) and I accept it and move the deviation in the regular members submission folder. :giggle:

Thank you for taking part in the contest. Good luck! :blowkiss:

This is awesome! I was hoping for a fun new  aqua challenge, but this one is double fun :D I think I've experimented with salt about 2-3 times, but never paid close attention to the technique. Reasons to do it this time! I'm looking forward to painting and entering the challenge :)

You're welcome! :tighthug:

The challenge for me has always been timing - I tend to either get impatient and put the salt down while there's still too much water to make an effect, or I wait too long and end up with very little visible texture. Somehow I always seem to miss that magic window of time when I should put the salt down. I'll try to get an entry in... even if it's a crummy painting maybe I will finally figure out the salt part at least! I am a dummy!

In case you added the salt too quick, that it's still too wet...use a paper tissue and collect some excess water, also on top of the salt. You will start too see how the salt pattern will form.
You maybe can't solve it 100%, but at least you lessen the damage. :dummy:

Salt in watercolour is one thing that I somehow never seem to be able to get right. The resulting texture is always either too strong or not strong enough. I think I'm too much of a control freak to just let the salt do its thing. :D

Maybe I should have another go. There's still lots of time left so we'll see. :)

What's Next for Eclipse: FeedbackLate last year, we released the beta version of DeviantArt Eclipse – a redesign that puts more emphasis on artists and their art. It’s one of our biggest, most ambitious updates to date, which is why we’ve chosen to open it to Beta Testers as early as we did. Not only do we need Beta Testers’ help locating and squashing those pesky bugs, we want to gain deviants’ feedback, thoughts, and opinions on the current Eclipse experience and what we should include in the future. We’re very proud and excited with the level of collaboration we’ve been able to achieve with the DeviantArt community, and we hope to continue this as we further develop Eclipse. The Beta version of Eclipse has brought many changes (see them here), with even more in store, including ways to customize and personalize Profiles! We Hear You!Since the Beta launch of Eclipse late last year, we’ve received a lot of feedback regarding just that: Feedback. You might have called it a few other names in the past: Feedback, Message Center, Notifications, etc. Let’s establish what Feedback is: it’s comments and replies made on your art, any mentions of you or your art, and correspondence with other deviants and groups. We processed and analyzed your thoughts and opinions on Feedback, and how cumbersome it had become to interact with friends on Eclipse. With that, we’re excited to show you some major updates in the works.Changes We’re Making Based on Your FeedbackNew NavigationYou can now easily access Feedback by clicking on the bell icon next to your avatar, with all the different areas visible for you to filter through.
