Totems and Totem Building

Journal Entry: Tue Aug 11, 2015, 8:31 PM

Totems are a symbol of pride and prestige to any Tokota owner. They provide boosts and advantages to your Tokota, similarly to companions and traits. Unlike the former, however, totems apply to your entire pack (all of the Tokotas you personally own,) and you may have up to 10 maximum. Your totem collection will likely be unique to you, and once you have collected 10 you become eligible for a special reward (WIP).

How do I earn a totem?

Totems can be earned through group events, achievements, special giveaways, exploration and caving (though the chance of finding one through the latter two is very, very low.) If you have a Tokota that is dominant, you can earn a totem based on their chosen soul animal by performing a set of tasks called Passage of the Alpha.

How do I display proof of my totems?

In order to utilize the benefits of your totem(s), you must create a journal or literature submission separate from your hunting/fishing/expedition trackers. Post the thumbnails of each totem along with the proof of you having earned it. The thumbnails are stackable; you are encouraged to put them one on top of the other so the result resembles a totem pole!

Here is an example of a suitable totem journal:

How do I utilize my totem benefits?

When filling out the form for an activity entry, posting a breeding comment, or entering a group competition or other event in which any of the benefits may apply, include a link to your totem journal. If the link is not included, your benefits will not apply. Totem benefits only apply to tokotas listed in your own ownership.

FAQ

Can I sell or transfer a totem?

No. If you earn a totem, you do not have to use it, but totems are uniquely yours.

What happens to my extra totems if I earn more than 10?

You may keep and interchange them, but you may only have 10 totems active at any given time.

Can I earn more totem slots?

In the future there will likely be an option for this as a reward for getting a certain number of tokotas to dominance, but for now you may only have 10!

How do I avoid being rolled for the Raven Totem, when people are gifting me a roll and I don't see it, just put "Totems - //link to tokotna.com side"?  I usually have my journal with Totems, where the Raven does not appear, but I can't help, when people link to Tokotna and I am not aware of this.

Unfortunately, unless you comment on the image or don't include the totem there isn't much way to prevent it.

I'm kind of confused - the totems do exactly the same thing as the Dominant companions... why do we also need the totems? Do they stack?

The totems apply to all your tokotas. ;u; Whereas the companion only applies to the tokota with the companion.

The totems were a huge drive to push some tokotas to alpha.  Can't wait to see more of these released and the requirements to get them.

correct, totems are locked to the user and can not be traded or sold even if the tokota is

If a tokota is being Leased(I know the leasing rules are changing and becoming more tied to tribes and such) but if its leased does it still get the totem bonus?
Like, for instance. I have all dominance totems. And I let a tribe mate lease my tokota, do they get to utilize my totems on JUST my tokota when used, or does it only work when the roll is for me?

Totems are tied to the user not to the Tokota, so if leasing is reinstated a leased Tokota would not be able to use its owners totem if the roll is for someone else.

Totems are tied to the user/owner, not the tokotas, so as long as all the tokotas are owned by the same person that has the totem, yes. c: If not only the tokos owned by the user with the totem get to use it.

If I have a totem, does it mean that any tokota of mine can use it's benefits? For example if I have an eagle totem and go fishing with a different tokota (not the toko who earned the totem) and who is not dom, can I still list the eagle totem in the activity form and get the benefits?

Yes - totems are linked to players, not to individual tokotas. So once you've earned one you can use it even with different tokos. :)

In the case of POTA Completion and unlocking the resulting Totem... If the Tokota was co-owned, does this enable both owners access to the totem, or just one?

If a Tokota is co-owned you will have to decide between yourselves who gets to use the totem and any other perks. PoTA tokens and totems can only be used by one person.

How does work Raven now? Some items considered trash are now useful (sticks for companion and glass for lantern). I hope having Raven in pack won't force owner to buy glass : p

there are upgraded items (like thread spools) that you can collect, however, you will not be able to find sticks/thread/etc. with the raven companion.

However, if you would like to collect those items with that toko, just don't list the raven companion in their bonuses and it won't be rolled for ^^

Okay, thanks for the answer! Imho this totem has pros (increases value of loot) and cons (loot is less diversified and if I need sticks for companion, I would never use my Raven Totem, so it becomes useless). Compared to other totems, which have obvious cons, I think Raven could be rethinked!

Just to add on, I believe the log (not a trash item) counts as sticks, so it doesn't have to be purely sticks to make Twiggy, it can be a combination of sticks and logs. The log counts as an upgraded item :)

Totems only work if the person who has the totem is getting the items, same for tribe bonuses.

What if items are divided between the leaser and the leasy? I've seen people link up their totems and tribe bonusses in lease journals so I'm not sure about it.

I have one lease ongoing in which all items are divided between me and the owner as equal as possible and one in which elemental heart/stones of Aippak go to them and everything else goes to me. I haven't been putting any bonusses in, but since the other journals popped up I wonder about the ruling in these cases.

People can link all the items they want, but they may not get them rolled for. depending on several circumstances. For example dozens of people say their tokota has a sturdy rod in their exploration pieces. Great - for fishing. But it obviously doesn't mean they get any kind of bonus for the exploration.

A grayer area is totems/tribes. If the leasey belongs to the same tribe as the leaser no problem. If they do not - then they can use whatever tribe bonuses they may have instead. Same for totems. For example player a has a deer totem player b has a raven totem. If player a leases player b's tokotas they can not use that raven totem - so even if they link that totem it would not be rolled for.

As for fifty-fifty I'm not sure.  I guess it would depend on what you are splitting and how you are splitting it. For example many leases ask for trait tokens/companions etc but the leasey still wouldn't get say a raven totem if the leaser had it.

If you use your own totems on someone elses tokotas (so tokotas not belonging to your own account) doesn't that kinda break use of the totems as well? It clearly states that "Unlike the former, however, totems apply to your entire pack (all of the Tokotas you personally own,)" and a lease doesn't grant you ownership?

Would you consider bringing this before the elder mods who go over rulings? There's a sudden influx of leases like this and rollers are gonna got to deal with this grey-area so it might be best to get it out of the grey-zone to ensure every case is treated within a set of existing rules rather than case-to-case basis.

No, a lease doesn't grant "ownership" but it does grant you all the items from the activity in most cases - so you can't use the leaser's items to help you - otherwise activity rolls/contest could become inbalanced if we took both sets of bonuses as applicable.

Yes, I see that. But I don't see how your own totems would apply in case of a lease either since they're not yours, especially if you're not sharing what's rolled. That's what I mean.

What should I do for my 50/50 case? We're seriously splitting as equally as possible from tokens to companions to gems so I don't know what to do. Act like I'm rolling their tokota for them or rolling him for me?

I guess it would depend whose bonus(es) you want to apply - yours or theirs. We want splitting items to be something players do - not something we have to step in and do so do whatever y'll agree is fair.

so is the totem useless to the tokota you earned it on, or does it stack?
for instance, if you chose the eagle companion and you're by default given the eagle totem, does that Alpha tokota have the chance to bring up to 10 fish? or is it only beneficial to your other tokotas?

You mean besides the benefits you get from completing PoTa (which is required to get a totem), no, it does not offer any additional bonus to tokos with that companion.
