The Bookskeeper or The Liberian
Charuli keeps track of records, not only from Narnvak but other places of Tokotna. Nothing can sate his need for knowledge and with each answer he finds more questions haunt him.
Tokota: Maritimus 31057
"More y'know the more useful you'r to me."
When most people think Liberian you picture a shabby old man with large glasses and shaggy clothes. Charuli is a well built man with dark greying hair in a faded undercut and slicked back top and a trim neat beard along his jaw. Dark tan skin, high cheek bones and a thin face with square glasses and deep maroon eyes. Often seen wearing lightly coloured button up shirts rolled up to the elbow and tucked into fitted jeans, he is a well dressed and well groomed man- also seen as a bachelor. If you were into someone in their mid 40's.
Charuli's downtime clothing are tan shorts, a loose fitting singlet and crocs with extra holes in them, curtesy of Maritimus, not to mention the hairs he is covered in from said Akota. How he tamed such and aggressive thing? Well, Charuli is a patient man.
A rather relaxed but no nonsense man, while Charuli has a rather decent sense of humour he is first seen as intimidating, nose in a book and brows knitted, eyes locked into a glare whenever he can't find the answer to his current question or dilemma.
When approached he will greet even the strangest of people with a curt smile, polite and to the point. Never good with strangers, yet open to the public he can be a very contradicting man. Friends often chastise him for never leaving work, being a bookworm and "no fun", or a buzzkill. But Charuli just likes to keep to himself and read.
Charuli is born and bred in Narnvak, his father was a fishermen and his mother was a diver, the pair were like bread and butter. Charuli absolutely hates water even living by the beach. Sand? He can tolerate, but the salty sting of water was something, even as a child, he never particularly enjoyed. Eventually Charuli grew up, got his own place and made a living before buying a large enough property to build his own library.
Rumors & Gossip:
- The scary Akota that hangs around.
- "Omg I can't believe he's single..." Take that as you will.
- Books, scrolls; anything that would be in his library.
- "Why does he live near a beach if he hates water?"
Name: Channing Brenton
Title: Local grievance
Career: His family is rich
Tokota: Dovetail (she's just got that fancy silky look)
Quote: "Why I- I never!"
Appearance: Bleached blonde hair in an expensive haircut that's made to look like it's no effort. He wears expensive, fashionable, business casual clothes. He's usually not seen in the same outfit year to year. Age probably in his 20s
Personality: Channing's just the kind of guy that you absolutely can't stand to be around but you feel like of bad for him so you try to be nice, but instantly regret it. He's very pompous and condescending. He doesn't go looking for fights or anything, generally just kind of minds his own business but if you cross paths with him you're gonna have a bad time.
Since no one really hangs around with him he speaks in an overly proper way and doesn't really use slang (although he knows what it means)
Background: After his father got rich over in Tokotna he wanted to have a big house by the coast, and what's more coast than Narnvak? Channing was raised in the house by himself and was homeschooled via virtual learning. He doesn't really have any friends in his age group.
Rumors & Gossip:
-His father is never there. He fakes phone calls (someone saw him "talking" on the phone once and it was just a calculator) and leaves voicemails to him.
-Is often seen alone, but is pretending to be waiting for someone if asked.
-Actually takes great care of his tokota and animals
-Locals don't really like him because his father is super rich and bought a big house and Channing himself is just himself.
((I thought there were too many likable characters))
Name: Ol' Matilda (AKA Miss Mattie)
Title: Chief Livestock Broker
Career: In charge of all livestock entering or leaving the Island (Sells/Trades companions)
Tokota: Several Toki's of the herding variety
Quote: "You short me one lousy token on this deal and I'll have those chickens turn on you with more ferocity than a pack of rabid weasels, ya hear?"
Appearance: Weathered, with wrinkled skin like tanned leather, indeterminate age, anywhere from 45-75, but don'tbe the fool that asks. Skinny as a rake but full of wiry muscle, always dressed practically for work in the pens with a set of elbow length leather gloves hanging from her belt. Eyes are a watery pale blue but sharp as an eagles, hair sun bleached to the colouring straw usually tied back in a practical braid.
Personality: Mattie is known to be blunt, which is not to say she's outwardly rude, but if she thinks you don't know what your talking about she's the kind of lady to call you on it and set you straight with the next breath. Not always quick to speak, but she does listen to every word to mull over before stating an opinion. Kind in her own ways, keeps the dock workers in boiled eggs from her personal flock every lunch hour, and let's the local children ask a million and one questions about whatever new assortments of animals are in her pens at any given time. Occasionally let's people do a task or barter for certain companions.
Background: Matilda's father worked for the dock cargo master, and after a particularly costly loss of imported chickens, she paid for the surviving chicks and bet the cargo master she could raise em, breed em up hardier, increase their numbers and their value, and devise a way to contain them safer while they waited for export and crate them so they survived the trip out. She proved her point. From there she improved care and transport of every other species that came off or went on a ship, and turned out to be a shrewd barterer to boot.
Rumors & Gossip:
• "If she would just keep those chickens of her's out of the house, she might just land a husband!" "It's a good thing she hasn't found a rooster big enough to fill a mans boots or finding her a husband would be moot!"
• "The woman is insane, who teaches chickens to attack when she has all those dogs available?"
• "Miss Mattie will get you all the dogs you want in trade for those rabbits, plus three more!"
Name: Duncan McDuncan
Title: The Dockmaster
Career: Harbor Master
Tokota: “Lassie” (May not be her actual name)
Quote: “Eh, that bucket of bolts? How de ye expect te weather them gales in that bea’en ol’ thing, young’un?”
Appearance: Duncan is an old man with a hunched back and a large ghost-white beard. Combined with a wrinkled face, brushy eyebrows, and a tattered old sailor’s cap his eyes seem to almost disappear completely. Don’t worry, he claims he can still see perfectly fine. Even after several showers he still smells like the sea.
Personality: Duncan is an introverted and somewhat grumpy, especially around strangers. He’s not one to talk much but when he does expect a mouth fitting for someone working close with sailors (he swears, don’t be surprised). He has a vague except that toes the fine line between Scottish and Irish, good luck figuring out which one it is.
Background: Duncan has a rather humble beginning, fitting for such a rather humble life. He grew up in a small coastal town, born to a pair of poor immigrant parents. From a young age Duncan would hang out around the dock and harbor area, eventually finding a good job as a sailor. He claims to have sailed around the world with “a lass at ev’ry port” though that’s probably just exaggeration. He refuses to say anything other than that, but somehow he managed to become the harbor master of said small town. Odd, in this small coastal town he’s the only one not flaunting his boat. He doesn’t even seem to have one. I wonder what happened to it.
Rumors & Gossip: They say he can tell when the storms are coming in and when they’ll be the strongest.
They say he ahs some control over animals as he’s always followed by a dog or a goat or a bird or some kind. However, aside form his tokota, he’s never seen with the same one twice.
His accent is fake. (Though many people are still willing to debate either side)
He used to be a sailor whose ship, one of the only thing’s he’s claimed to love, sunk in a storm and left him the only survivor.
Name: Embla Njála
Title: Head Narnvak Park Ranger
Career: Embla is the local head ranger for the Narnvak area.
Quote: "When in doubt, put the campfire out!"
Appearance: Embla is tall, lean, and athletic. She has long, chocolate brown hair, blue eyes and tanned skin.
Personality: Kind and generous, Embla is willing to help those who need it. She has a very strict outlook when it comes to fire bans, having seen firsthand as a child, just what an out of control forest fire can do and even looks like. She became a Park Ranger for Narnvak at the age of 20 and slowly worked her way up the ranks to Head Ranger by the time she was 32.
Background: Embla as a child was carefree until one of Narnvak's worst known forest fires in history ravaged the area. It was as a young teen, that she watched as both wildlife and people lost their lives as the fires swept through at astonishing speeds. This spurned her into becoming a Park Ranger, only the second known in Narnvak's history next to her uncle, who was the first. At 18 she joined the school that taught locals how to manage the forest, it's wildlife, and how to spot signs of wildfire potential. By the time she was 20, she officially joined and by the time she was 32, had moved her way up the ranks as Head Ranger. Not much is known about her personal life, such as who she is crushing on, has dated, etc. What is known is that she has a young daughter named Elva though who her father is and where he is, isn't known, though it's assumed, he may have been a ranger who died tragically during a rescue mission, several summer prior.
The owner to a stunning long maned dire whom she named Unna whose name means 'To love', Embla loves to use her friend for whenever she's out patrolling the vast forests of Narnvak.
Rumors & Gossip: While gossip and rumors go a long way on Narnvak, the fact remains that they are often formed from baseless facts. Embla is no exception. Having a young, fatherless child, has seen her the center piece of many cruel and heartless rumors and gossip, some of which one wouldn't expect to happen within the Tokotna regions. It's said she only joined the rangers and became head ranger based on her uncle's strong input. Many believe the title and position was handed to her and that she did less work than the others in her graduating class.
Name: Willy (Wilfred) the Wizard
Title: The Grand Magic Master
Career: Self Employed 'Wizard'
Tokota: Nyla 6957
Quote: "No refunds"
Appearance: 5'4" (Hunched over), skin ranges from slightly tan to burnt, brown eyes, obscenely long beard, messy, attaches what he finds on the shore to his fishing net 'robes.'
Personality: 'Crazy' but overall harmless. Willy has lived under a pier in one of the more touristy areas for around 13 years, where he collects and crafts 'magical talismans' to sell to the visitors. Due to his diligent collection of 'magical material' the beach has been kept clean for over a decade and the Magician has become somewhat of a tourist attraction himself. He loves to give new 'heros' quests and talk about his battles with sea monsters at night.
Background: His background isn't really known by many and if you ask then you get a long drawn out heroic tale that... is 90% untrue.
Rumors & Gossip:
- Has grandkids who occasionally visit
- Picks off the breading before he eats corndogs
- Has shoes, just refuses to wear them
(I know it wasn't supposed to be art, but I couldn't help it)
Name: Naupaka Maren
Career: Head of the Narnvak Coast Guard
Tokota: Sourdough 36045
Quote: Take it easy!
Appearance: Tanned, with a wide-set face and dark eyes deep set in laughter lines. Her dark hair is long and wavy; when she lets it hang loose, it has streaks of silver. She often wears her hair in a crown braid and enjoys adorning herself with the flowers of her home beaches. Wideset and short, she likes to joke that an advantage of living on the beach is easy access to sno-cones and BBQs. Nevertheless, she is more than fit enough to handle a ship in stormy waters (or to participate in the occasional game of beach volleyball).
Personality: Named for a flower that flourishes on both mountains and beaches, Naupaka is a master of adaptability. She always has an easy-going air about her, but she somehow manages to have her hand in everything happening on the beaches. From BBQs to surfing contests, she is a constant and beloved presence. She takes safety seriously. She also takes great pride in organizing beach clean ups and other conservation efforts. Her defining characteristic is a deep and abiding love for the ocean. Nothing makes her happier than taking a moment to watch the waves. Generally seen smiling, her moods can be as mercurial as the sea: she has a deep current of stubbornness and an ability to command. When danger is at hand, she is the one people look to for a solution.
Contrary to her catch-phrase, no one works harder than Naupaka. She has lived in Narnvak all her life. She is also related to a large portion of the island and seems to somehow know everyone. If something needs to be done, Nuapaka knows the right person for the job. Her connections made it easy for her to ascend the ranks of the Narnvak Coast Guard, but her ability to earn respect allowed her to keep the position.
Rarely seen more than twenty feet from the ocean. She lives in a lifeguard hut she built herself, with the help of the community who loves her.
Her tokota, Sourdough, is a bit of a beach bum outside of work. Make no mistake, though--he's a ferocious diver and is an absolute pro at delivering flotation devices, even in dangerous waters. Just don't expect him to give up napping in the sun on his off days.
Rumors & Gossip: She won the annual Narnvak surfing competition twelve years in a row. Rumor has it she could still win, but she stepped aside to give "young pups" the opportunity.
Large landmarks that would exist outside of a city or town!
Climate: (Short description of the weather)
Description: (Overview of location)
Local Landmarks: (List of points of interest with short descriptions accompanying)
Lore: (Any local legends, rumors, or history tidbits)
Name: The Dueling Isles
Climate: Unusually dramatic, with frequent storms.
Description: The Dueling Isles is a chain of small islands accessible only at low tide. During high tide, they look exactly like isolated islands - but at low tide, larger footpaths emerge in the sand. They generally lack fauna other than small critters like birds and crabs, and only a few shrubs and trees dot the islands.
Local Landmarks: The Battleground - the largest island here. Years ago, someone left heavy rocks in the sand in the shape of a large circle. This is where most duels take place.
Lore: The Dueling Isles has been used as, like the name implies, dueling. The islands are said to be watched over by (insert deity here - preferably a warrior-like one, such as borga?). If two tokotas or humans have a truly important score to settle, the native Narnvakians will guide them to this chain of islands at high tide. They are then told to wait there until the islands are accessible, and only then are they allowed to participate in a trial by combat. The wait from high to low tide is intentional - many differences are settled in this time as the participants are forced to sit and wait together. Additionally, those who are hesitant to fight are often scared off by the long wait. Very few duels ever break out here. Those who are dueling over something trivial, or doing so without waiting from high to low tide, are said to be cursed by the deity watching over this place.
Name: Heartstone Beach
Climate: Almost always fair, thanks to the mild ocean currents around Narnvak.
Description: Heartstone Beach is a secluded pocket beach (tucked away between two headlands) on the south of Narnvak composed of vibrant pink sand. The rocky cliff "walls" surrounding it are a pure, white stone - giving the area a beautiful and pristine appearance. Flora sits atop the cliffs, complete with flowering vines hanging down, adding to the seclusive nature of the area.
Heartstone Altar - A large stone outcropping, shaped vaguely like a heart. This is the site of many bonding and wedding ceremonies, between humans and tokotas alike.
The White Cliffs - For the less romantic, the cliffs surrounding Heartstone Beach make for a great cliff-diving platform.
Lore: Heartstone Beach has been used as a sacred spot for the Narnvak citizens' wedding and bonding ceremonies for generations. Legend says that the area was blessed by a spirit of companionship (Sikrinerk?), turning the sand forever pink. Couples and groups (romantic and platonic) willing to make the journey down the cliffs to the beach and perform a bonding ceremony are said to be linked forever.
Name: Trebok Forest
Climate: Often foggy and grey, dappled sunlight through the clouds occasionally.
Description: Misty coastal forest. An old growth evergreen forest, if you walk the depths of this forest you may see trees old and large enough that should they be cut you could dance upon their stumps. Clinging moss hangs down in veil like strands from many branches.
Local Landmarks: The wizard stump, a huge old stump that looks a little like a wizard's forgotten hat. The stump is hollow and makes a good place to stay overnight for small parties of hikers.
Lore: Lore says this is a primordial forest that predates human or tokotas time in this land. Creatures forgotten by time can occasionally be sighted through the fog.
Name: týnd ást (lost love)
Climate: mild but always with a slightly cooling wind, only soft rain touches the area
Description: týnd ást is a small cavern surrounded by cliffs, it’s well known for the stream in the water that gathers several items from the sea right into the cavern. You’ll often find bottle posts. The covered place is also known by lovers for short make outs at the perfect view on sun sets!
big top of the cliff > perfect view on the sun set, but no coverage of the rain
The small shore > cozy and covered, but hard to get out again in the darkness
caver. > filled with treasures, but also with the unknown
A rumor says that taking your flirt to this place will show you the truth about your relationship if you’re ready to hear/see it. Several couples break off after the visit of that place or lived happy ever after.
Finding a bottle letter promises the chance to find your soulmate.
Name: Buoguf’s Cliff
Climate: Warm and sunny during most of the year with occasional thunderstorms. Expiriences large storms during hurican seasons.
Description: This picturesque cliff side invites for a stroll along the seaside. During low tide a strip of sandy beach forms along the bottom, luring tourists and adventures to explore. The sea here is warm and teaming with flora and fauna and on the first glance makes the perfect place to swim or dive.
However Human and Tokota alike need to be cautious when enjoying the beautiful sights this place has to offer. There is a large maze of caves broring deep inside the cliffs and even stretching out under the ocean with the occasinal entrance under water.
You can easily get lost in the winding and interlacing tunnels. So caution is adviced when advancing into the caves. During low tide a lot off entrances in the cliff side get exposed and it might spark the curiosity of a wanderer, but most of the tunnels get flodded during high tides, leading to a quick demise of anyone still spelunking.
Landmarks: -Scenic trail on top off the cliff side with a little light house on he half way point
- countless caves and tunnels that stretch out below the survice
Lore: Named after the person built the light house
Due to a number of people going missing in the caves it is said to be inhabited by dark deitis and mermaids or even sirens, that pull unsuspeting souls into the water, never to be seen again.
