Someone asked REALLY nicely about work in progress shots, so here you are...

As you can see, these things usually go through something of an evolution from start to finish. There's seldom a direct route to the designer or design team's vision and that's reflected in these shots. Of particular note, you can see a huge difference in the early development of Lara's face, as well as an eventual idealization of her figure. It's frequently remarked that often times the end result may not look entirely like the designer's concept sketch. Designers, development teams, and the sculptors will usually have numerous discussions and changes will be made that might pull away from initial concepts. Sometimes licensors (those that hold legal ownership of the character) may even require changes to be made that also draw away from the initial design. And lastly, sometimes it's decided that particular elements need to be changed due to production costs or they just don't work in three dimensions and may detract from the overall piece.

AH! Lara Croft Premium Format Statue. Designed by Adam Hughes. Sculpted for Sideshow Collectibles. Wax, Balsa Foam, Bond-O, Castilene, and Resin. Entire piece stands 20", 2010.
Final approved sculpture. Critiques are not welcomed. Thank you for understanding.

Special thanks to Carissa Monroe [link] for modeling support and providing valuable reference.

The AH! Lara Croft Premium Format figure goes up for order June 2nd at [link] but you must be on their newsletter list to purchase that day. You can sign up for Sideshow's newsletter at [link]

As always, I'd like to thank Adam Hughes and Sideshow Collectibles for the opportunity to work on such a special piece. This project was especially challenging but has also risen to the top of my favorite pieces to work on, and I'm very pleased with how she's turned out. I hope you all enjoy her as much as I do!

It must give you great satisfaction to produce objects of such beauty - I am not a collector of these but I do enjoy seeing them.

Thank you so much for posting your WIPs, it really is invaluable to beginners like myself to get an idea of:

- How to start a piece and different methods of doing so
- Not get disheartened during the sculpting as the character doesn't come through till later on in the process
- And just to show that it can be done, and isn't magic :)

Really though, thanks. Your work is INCREDIBLE.

How do you build the clothes on top of the figure? I want to try making my own figures but I haven't tried doing anything as intricate and detailed as people. (I have made swords, mugs, plates and such)

In some cases they're sculpted, but in this case a team of miniature costumers managed real clothing.
