In the setting of the book I'm writing, there's a vast swath of arctic land and ocean. I'm not particularly familiar with that sort of terrain/environment, and it's greatly inspiring to see images like this that open my mind to the possibilities. I don't see the story going that far north, but I'm anxious now to find a reason for something to take place up there so I can stretch these muscles.

Every time I see a painting like this I think that in the bottom there is a story but I don't always see that.
This one deserves a story, is just that fascinating and mysterious.

Thanks =)
I always have a story in my head but I feel it's not my place to tell it as well as illustrate it. I just do 1 part, the other - the story - is for the viewer to fill; so then we both do our part.

The ship was meant to explore the Antarctic ocean. They travel day and night until they got to the location they were suppose to land but the ice sheets were hundreds of feet high. They thought that there plans were going bad until they saw a crack in the ice. The Captain said "hey, maybe we could go inside there and explore from the inside". His crew did not agree with him but they would not disobey an order.So they went through the crack, they travel until it go so dark they needed a person with a lantern to go to the bow and tell them if anything is going to hit the ship. They travel for an hour until they started to see a little bit of light in the distance and an opening. The crew were happy because they though they were going to the other side of this ice but they were wrong it was just an opening to a cave which had the light coming from the sealing. The captain try to cheer them up by saying "ha, sheer up mate the tunnel still continue through there other end and..." but he was cut short by one of his crew saying "hey there is a city in the bottom of the ocean, look". So everyone went to the edge and they saw what was a beautiful city but was ravage by the sea. Then they notice how there were other ships there, some of them most have been there just some few months. Then they knew they were not the only one that went through there. All of the ships had the bottom destroy like the ice crush them and they were their next victim. The ice pices of around them did not at first try to crush them it just started when they were half way to the other cave in the end that is when they saw the chunk grew bigger, they started to connect with each other until it cover around them. One of the crew said "This look like magic, it must be a defense system of this city". He was right when the ice cover around them it crush the bottom of their ship and at last the ice retreated to see the ship sink with all of his crew to join the rest of the ship in the bottom.

What do you think, Good? :) I made it up in just 30 minutes.

I'll try :) Though I don't think it's much of a speedpainting now. lol I need to get in the habit not to worry about the details right from the start. But I think I am almost done with it.

I like the mood and tone a lot, would be interesting to see even more hours put in and adding more shades of blue and maybe going into some of the colder earth tones too.

yeah; it's a tricky one - I don't want to paint a painting to death by making it too detailed.

Any painting I make is usually never "finished" every painter has to decide when its time to stop adding.

well, mattepainting I dont know much about because I never do it xD
As for speedpainting; just do a lot of speedpainting haha. Not much to it except practicing a lot; looking at a lot of images, watch tons of movies, get inspired, then paint. At least, thats what I do. Speedpainting is all about composition and subject matter / atmosphere and lastly about rendering technique, so the How is least important and will grow with time.

How long have you been speedpainting?? Cause i'm starting matte/speeding myself and i find it hard to overcome the 'fear of the white paper'... i've only started developing my intrest in speeds & mattes since a year or so so i'm not anywhere yet... i'm more used to photo manipulations =P
Anyhow =P thanx for replying :)

well, I've been painting for a few years now - and paintings like you see in my steps I've only gotten into weeks ago. But I think it's been a good 2 years since I started speedpainting =)

Not really; I had a few years of art academy as experience but that was mostly theory. So; It was just a case of getting busy and not stopping xD!
