Mark XII Dreadnaught design by TiredJadedSoul Mark XII Dreadnaught design by TiredJadedSoul
The Mark XII Dreadnaught was the pinnacle of Federation warship designs and the last of the old style Mark X class designs. Having reached the maximum point of diminishing returns on design, only 6 Mark XII Dreadnaughts were ever produced.

Combining many design factors prevalent in Starfleet at the time, the Mark XII utilizes "over and under" phaser bank placements as well as single mount phasers. Equipped with 22 phasers (9 in banks of 2 and 4 in banks of 1), phaser fire coverage is complete with a large percentage of the phaser banks being able to fire in any direction at one time. The Mark XII also utilizes both forward and aft firing photon torpedo banks and a through-deck shuttle hangar launch / recovery system for the 18 shuttlecraft carried by this class of ship.

A full compliment of Marines are also stationed aboard with attached support and logistics elements as well. The Mark XII operated design facets that would later lead to innovations found in the Constitution II as well as the Excelsior class starships.

Artist note - I always felt that the Federation Dreadnaught from the TOS era was vastly under armed and that rear sensor dish / deflector really made no sense. Adding some improvements to weaponry and secondary hull design and fiddling with the specs some gave a much more powerful ship worthy of the title "Dreadnaught".

I have not seen this for a while - and it's a scan taken directly from the original Franz Josef Starfleet Manual.

The foundation for the design started with the FJ SFM base but there are several differences between the FJ SFM design and mine.  I'm rather nostalgic of the FJ SFM, a cherished childhood treasure for the fan of TOS.

Insta faved, mainly for two reasons;
1. A thru-deck hangar makes a lot more sense for a starship.
2. This design also retcons/explains where Riker's Future Enterprise of TNG fame could have come from, at least from a design perspective.

Also, it looks to be a formidable federation vessel. Id like to see it in Star Trek Legacy or Starfleet Academy as a playable vessel.

Thank you. As old as I am, I was playing Starfleet Battles as a child in the late 1970's and early 1980's, the pen and paper game with the miniatures you moved around on a giant table sized hex map. Lately "Federation Commander" has piqued my interest and we may add that to our monthly "get together and play some boxed game" group. Just for fun, I'll cobble up an old style SSD for this DN later this week and post it so that if anyone wants to add this design to their SFB games they can do so. Someone will have to figure out the BPV value for it, though. My SFB geek level is way too rusty to even begin to calculate something like that and I don't have a copy of the current rules in my collection to even have a place to begin.
