PE: Free + Open Source Art Programs
There are plently of art programs out there, but many cost money to buy. This article aims to help you find a free or open source altneratives to paid art programs.
The following programs are alternatives to digital painting programs like Paint Tool SAI and Corel Paintshop Pro.
Krita is a great program that is actively developed and has a plethora of features. The brush engine in particular is really nice. Similar to GIMP & Photoshop, Krita does more than just digital painting. You can do things like photomanipulation, and it offers a variety of file formats and templates to experiment with. Because there are so many features, the learning curve is going to be higher than with something like SAI, but since it's well laid out and gorgeous, you should be able to paint gorgeous stuff in no time.
Keep in mind, Krita uses a lot of RAM & CPU, and you might need a graphics card to keep the pro
Paint Tool Sai vs. FireAlpaca - Review
Hi guys! Welcome to another one of my articles, this time I'll be giving you a thorough review about two very similar art programs, Paint Tool SAI and FireAlpaca.
Anyone who's just starting out with digital art might be asking themselves, Should I pay for Photoshop? Should I use a crack? Should I look for a free art program?
There are some of those like me, who kinda can't really afford expensive programs, I luckily got my PS in a package that came with my Bamboo Tablet. Luckily, FireAlpaca is free, and Paint Tool Sai has a portable version which is free.

PE: Photoshop Brush Primer
There are a plethora of brushes available to you on photoshop. This guide will explain different brush settings, as well as how to install different brush packs here on deviantART. This guide is for pressure sensitive pen tablets. It is going to be much easier to do things with a tablet. Ones by Wacom are good, and you can get a bamboo for under 99$ USD.
Basic Brushes in Photoshop
It's important to stick with default ones to learn all the settings. You can do so many things with the hard round brush.
Bring up your brush palette in one of the following ways. (note I am in CS3, so the icons will look much older, but same thing. )

So in this article you'll find tutorials: How to make layers, How to change color to a layer, How to make groups/folders, How to change background color, How to rotate canvas and all basics in tool menu on the right side. In this tutorial I used my newest image Mermaid's Wisps, just to show you few things (I just had to open something )
If you wish to see images in full resolution then simply click on the images below (they are big as my screen 1920 x 1080px... OK I cropped bar below ). I used Photoshop CS6 here, so some things may be different in lower PS versions. I'll make even more tutorials
UPDATE AGAIN! FREE ART SOFTWARE!
Hey again! A couple of friends stumbled on this new art program, and it's free to use (and for mac and windows!) It handles like a very simplified version of SAI mixed with photoshop, and it's pretty neat! (and doesn't take up much disc space). It's not as powerful, but if any of you were looking for a good program, this is definitely the thing to get, and it's pretty somple to get the hang of for beginners@
here's the site- http://firealpaca.com/
ALSO!! If you're looking for a cheap tablet pen, check this out~ http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10841
They are ridiculously cheap, and I used a friend of mine's and it handles better than my bamboo! And it has a bunch of cool features (and holy shit it's cheap!)
Alright, hope that helps!
Hey guys! Because this was kind of popular, I decided to make an advice askblog with a friend: http://adviceosaurus.tumblr.com/ . You can go on there and as questions, and you can do it anonymously if you don't want
