There were many things that Dib Membrane was used to. Being ignored. Being mocked. Being the only person on Earth with a functioning brain. But there was one thing, just one thing that had started to chip away at his sanity like a tiny, persistent drill. It started at home. He sat at the breakfast table, furiously typing on his laptop. “Breaking: Alien invasion imminent - Proof #472...” he muttered, adjusting his glasses. From across the table, Gaz Membrane didn’t even look up from her handheld. “Your head is blocking the screen,” she said flatly. Her brother froze. “What?” “Your head,” she repeated, still playing. “It’s big. Zim was humming to himself, which was never a good sign. He had many plans, but even by his standards this one was… wobbly. Deep beneath the base, the trouble began in the underground laboratory, where wires draped from the ceiling like confused vines and sparks leapt from machine to machine for no clear reason. He stood atop a crate, arms thrown wide, red eyes blazing with confidence. He adjusted dials that weren’t connected to anything and flipped switches that clearly should not be flipped. “Soon…” he muttered, tapping the side of his head. “…the Dib will be rendered powerless by the most humiliating force in the universe… inconvenience!” The machine whirred louder, a bulb popping off and bouncing across the floor. Dib Membrane had not slept in three days. It was not unusual. His room smelt of ozone, burnt rubber, and something suspiciously like cheese pizza. He hunched over his computer, eyes bloodshot, finger hovering over the mouse. “Okay,” he muttered to himself. “Last time, the spectral lie detector only exploded a little, and the time before that, the anti-alien ray only reversed everyone to be 'normal'." A sudden flashback had him looking back at that moment: He stared at the listing on Spooky-Mart, jaw clenched. It listed the 'anti-alien ray'. “Calibrated specifically for extraterrestrial biology!” he read. "It may misinterpret 'extraterrestrial' broadly. That’s fine. Professor Membrane knew Santa Claus was real; he had seen enough classified evidence and unexplained phenomena to accept that fact, but that knowledge only fuelled his long-standing resentment. As a child, he had waited with meticulous hope for a very specific gift, one that never arrived, and the disappointment had calcified into a lifelong grudge against the red-suited icon. Still, when Christmas came around, he refused to let his personal bitterness taint his children’s joy. Dib and Gaz celebrated the holiday under his watchful, pragmatic care, waking to thoughtfully chosen presents placed there by their father, not Santa. He might dislike the man at the North Pole, but he would never deny his children a proper Christmas. A new sci-fi movie called 'Galactic Greebs' was being shown in the cinema. It had been filmed in the city, so of course, local people were curious about it. It featured adorable, wide-eyed, colourful aliens who spoke in nonsense syllables. It sold absolutely unjustifiable quantities of merchandise with its popularity. Every child at school had become obsessed: backpacks, lunchboxes, stickers, collectible holographic cards, even limited edition alien slime. Kids were quoting lines. There was alien-themed everything. Dib is bewildered and mildly offended. He wasn't at all interested in fake alien movies, especially when he knew actual aliens existed. The whole school was obsessed. It was another ordinary afternoon in the city. Somewhere in the distance, a lawnmower droned in a monotonous rhythm. Dib sprinted down the street, phone clutched tightly in one hand, determined to finally expose Zim’s latest scheme. “I know you’re up to something, Zim! I can feel it!” he shouted, legs pumping like pistons. His trench coat flapped dramatically behind him. In the dim green glow of his underground lab, he stood before a towering containment pod, wires sparking and humming like nervous insects. “Behold!” he announced to no one in particular, because GIR was chasing a dust bunny. “My greatest invention yet! A breakthrough in Irken technology! A masterpiece of mimicry! A perfect copy." He pressed a button. The pod hissed open. Inside stood… Zim. But human. Dib and Zim were already in the middle of the cluttered classroom, voices rising over the hum of faulty fluorescent lights as they launched into yet another argument. The human boy jabbed a finger towards Zim’s latest contraption, an ominously humming box covered in wires and glowing symbols, insisting it was obviously a doomsday device and that everyone else was simply too oblivious to notice. The Irken, sputtering with theatrical outrage, declared his foe's 'pathetic human brain-meats' incapable of understanding advanced Irken technology, calling the device a 'harmless, gloriously superior multifunctional hyper-module' that definitely did not aim to enslave the entire planet.
