In preparation for this year's Mermay, I made a nice big collection of (sometimes rough, sometimes more detailled) sketches- the idea was to have an "inspiration buffer" to draw from.

I really got back into drawing maybe two or three years ago and to be honest, it often doesn't come that easy to me. I amost always have to work for a picture, and when you're spending a whole month on any one
theme it's always easy to just stick to your guns and not try out anything that would require "a lot of effort/time".

So here we have it- 40 mermaid sketches, and some of them I really like :D Once May comes around I can just pick a sketch each day and create a final piece from it. And I'll have sketches to *spare* too, that's always a
win,
To be honest, just seeing 40 pretty different desings, new poses, little experiments and occasional backgrounds does me a spell of good. There is some repetition and there are some "meh" sketches (meh-maids maybe?), but
I don't think I've thrown out such a large number of sketches in such a short time and it really has a lot of benefits: After a few stiff, save sketches I felt the lines becoming loser, more dynamic, and after a while I felt more
confident and that was when the fun really started. It's also been a nice way to determine a base design and then play with it.
And finally, it's been great not to ever feel precious. One sketch doesn't work? Well, move on! You'll get it next time and now at least you have it out of your system. Pretty cathartic, which is fitting, all sketchies being underwater after all :D

Any sketch in that big old megawad you enjoy? Any one you'd rather not see picked? I'm always curious to get feedback, so shoot me a line if you have the time!

Edit: Enabled Mature Content- it's super tame and there is nary any detail, this being sketches, but better safe than sorry ;)

Those are all wonderful and so life-like, my personal favourites being:

- r1c3 for comedic factor
- r6c5 for the pose
- r7c3 for the conveyed motion (along with r7c6)

You are 12 sketches short of a standard deck (or well above the treshold of a Skat deck!).

Glad you enjoy the sketches :) I think the Anglerfish (row1col3) is actually one of my least favourite ones, it was one of the first warm-ups and the one thing is has going for it is the weird body design. Anglerfish are pretty creepy critters.
The "deck thing" got me interested, though. I mean, playing cards? That's right up my alley, that could be fun to do. Later, though. And not with mermaids probably. Don't think I ever got a close shave at making a tarot deck of sorts...
Mmmmm...
