Paul Stevens huffed as he came into the house, dragging the heavy bags of groceries on his arms. He let out a short groan as he closed the door behind him, followed by a grunt as he let the bags fall to the floor. He grabbed the lightest one and plopped it onto the kitchen table before taking a deep breath and cupping his hands. “Girls! Snacks!”  Excited squeals sounded from upstairs, followed shortly by the banging of three pairs of feet as the only other occupants of the house came barreling down the stairs. The girls eagerly grabbed at the bags. “Ooo…marshmallows and popcorn!” Avery squealed with joy.  “And chips!” Violet announced, removing the final item from the bag. “Thanks, Dad!” exclaimed the tallest one, Claudia. “Alright everyone…shh, quiet! Hey!”  The chatter around the table died down as the other eight people looked over at the man who was calling out to them from the head. The man smiled and raised his glass. “I’d like to propose a toast. To good friends this family season…” his words were met with exclamations of ‘yes’ and ‘woo’ as others raised their glass as well. He turned to the woman seated beside him and beamed. “...and also to my lovely wife, who for better or for worse, seems to think I’m worth keeping around.” Laughter erupted. The man raised his glass just a little bit further and nodded his head. “Merry Christmas,” he said. Many around the table echoed the same words as everybody drank. The four couple exchanged loving looks, some even taking each others’ hand or exchanging a quick kiss as they took a sip of their festive drinks. And then there was Natalie. “Wow.” That’s what Dexter said to himself as he entered the massive auditorium at his place of employment. He had only ever been in this room once for a seminar, but now the usually drab seating space had been transformed into a sparkling, colorful winter wonderland. His company had really pulled out the stops: linen-covered tables, a full dance floor and a DJ, and he could see long buffet tables covered with sweet and savory delights of every kind. Not to mention the line at a made-up bar station near the back. As stressful as his day-to-day work was, it was really nice to see the company putting a real effort in at the end of the year. That’s when he noticed how people were dressed. Men wore slacks, shirts and open jackets…the women wore either pants or skirts and tops. She approached the large door and took a moment to fluff her hair before reaching out and pressing the bell. She waited a few moments until she heard the lock click. Hiding the device behind her back, she smiled widely as the short, brown-haired woman answered the door. “Hi, Angela,” Karen said. The other woman’s eyes widened a bit as she opened the door. “Karen!” she said with surprise. “This is unexpected…I didn’t expect you today.” “I know,” Karen cooed. She reached forward and gently took the woman’s jaw between her fingers, tilting her head up.
