"How do you feel about Such A Classic's chances in this years Breeders Cup Classic?" Asked a local reporter. David was used to attention, but even this was starting to feel like too much. Every since her rounds in both the American and the Canadian Triple Crown races, he hasnt seemed to catch a break. This was probably to fifteenth time he had answered this question already.
"Well, she's been a strong competitor all season. She has done very well, were proud of her. We feel very good about her chances," He said, reciting the same answer he did before, enjoying the look of frustration on the reporter's face. He smiled and walked back over to the schooling stall, where Klassy was being saddled by Rico and Tony. The mare was calm, but was happily interested in what was going on around her. This was her normal pre-race face, so it helped David to relax a little. There was a slight possibilty that this would be her final start, so David made sure to take in every sight. Every smell. Everything with this mare. He rubbed her nose and landed a kiss on the bridge of her nose.
"Feeling emotional?" Tony asked the traine, noticing the look on his face. David just nodded. It was a lot to take in. This horse had done things for him as a trainer that no horse had ever done before. The chances of having another horse to train like her was very slim. You usually only got one great horse in your lifetime.
"How's Ghost doing?" David asked, trying to see the mare. Her white frame was being walked out into a circle and back in. The usual sign that the team was ready to go, just making final adjustments to the girth if needed.
"She looks good, like usual. All the horses here seem to have a decent bit of exerpience. There are a few horses who dont, but of course Ghost is the most traveled. As well as Blackbeard," Tony said as he looked over the saddling paddock as Rico finished her girth and walked her in a circle.
"Well you did your homework, I see," David said as they stood there for a minute, just looking at everything. He was pretty sure that the race would be like the past. Everyone would probably have most of their eyes - and bets - on Ghost and Klassy. Both horses had acquired lots of fans, like past great racehorses. The crowd loved the competition between the two mares, however, they were still friendly enough on the backside. The competition was work only. In play, the girls loved to see each other. They had raced together so much that we were pretty sure at this point they stuck together like glue on the track because they were friends. It was silly, but it made everyone laugh.
"Here we go," Rico said as they played the call to post as horses were leaving their schooling stalls and going around the ring to pick up their jockeys. Rodney had been on the side chatting with Ayden, the only person David trusted to ready Klassy's jockey besides himself. Tony and David walked over to meet up with them as Rico walked the mare around.
"Plan?" David asked, stopping next to Ayden.
"Just let her do her thing, really. Make sure she doesn't use herself up before the turn, but really Rodney knows her style better than we do," Ayden said as he gave Rodney a leg up. As the trio continued around the ring and under the grandstand, the three of them started off towards their respective seating. This was going to be the race of the season for the big bay mare.
