Tenjin matsuri, Osaka, Japan.

Tenjin festival is one of the three great festivals in Japan and has a history stretching back over 1000 years. I was lucky enough to get a sweatband that allowed entry to the Tenman-gu shrine while this part of the festival was taking place.

In the middle of the photo is a float carrying a huge taiko drum. The guys with the red hats are the drummers. The float is carried around the shrine and tipped violently from side to side. When the people carrying it get tired, they drop it. The whole thing is pretty dangerous and was difficult to take photos of as people were running and pushing all over the place. Fun though!

This probably explains it better than I can: [link]

Most people probably don't think too much about the origins though and just see it as a good reason to go out and have fun.

I guess anything can be a hat if you wear it on your head right?
Unless it's a bandana... or a headband... oh forget it!

Anyway, I think they are shaped like bags to collect donations for the shrine, but I have imagined that.
