Do you remember
The apple that we stole
From the old man's garden
And how we shared it
Bite by bite
Do you remember
The moth that flew
Too close to the candle
And burned its wings
Spark by spark
Do you remember
The kitten that we saw
While skipping bible class
To tell a silly tale
Lie by lie
Do you remember
The tanks and lorries
Rolling by that day
When the foe invaded
Town by town
Do you remember
The roaring thunder
Of the heavy bombers
Flying back from sorties
Plane by plane
Do you remember
The wreath of daisies
The girls were bringing
When we finally returned
Step by step
Do you remember
The first of many steps
Mischa took that Monday
As the rain fell warm and soft
Drop by drop
Do you remember
The humble homesteads
We build from ruin
With our rugged hands
Plank by plank
Do you remember
The cheerful feast
When Mischa graduated
And the speech you held
Word by word
Do you remember
A million small events
The cups of tea with milk
And how we reaped our crops
Grain by grain
Do you remember
How the veil
Of dull and grey dismay
Slowly took your wits
Thought by thought
You may have lost
It all as time crept by
And chiseled 'way
Your mind and wits
Chip by chip
But I remember
Every word you spoke
And every vow you made
I will keep it all alive
Day by day.
This poem touched me because it speaks simply and directly of the memories of a lifetime. And it does so with so much tenderness, especially when it speaks of the loved one who continues to love and remember with strength. It is a melancholic poem, but also full of love and faithfulness. I like it very much.
