This one is done for a workshop I wrote for a book about Photoshop and what you can do with it. Goal was it to create something cool with tools that don't require a too heavy investment. Yet again it was pretty much impossible to find a way how I could explain my Scifi stuff. Too much heavy software required and also far too complex for only 20-30 pages. So after some thinking and brainstorming we decided to go the fractal route which worked really good if you ask me. I suggested to work with Apophysis, create some plates that eventually would be combined and refined in Photoshop. I haven't done a fractal piece for years and had some fun working on this one. I'm pretty satisfied how the pic and the workshop turned out and hope that it gives Apophysis some spotlight since it's a really nifty tool when used right.

Thanks goes out to the people at Galileo Design and Georg Kiehne (creator of Apophysis 7X) for his technical advice. Find his amazing fractal work here: :iconxyrus-02:

The colors are gorgeous and the way they flow is something I have tried several times myself when attempting to draw but failed. It's really pleasant to look at and calming, and the choices in color; both warm and cool, create a balance of feeling.

I don't quite get the same reaction from the background imagery. The shapes and quality kind of clash with the foreground colors.

I love this kind of art and It was surprising to see it from you. (it's an awesome surprise)

Well this pic wasn't drawn. The elements were rendered with a fractal software and combined in Photoshop. I think literally drawing such things aren't easy to do. Accurate lines and curves can be very hard to do. =) But anyway, yes I can understand your point about the background. Every now and then I really enjoy departing from my usual work and do something with fractals. There it's just about creating something cool and pleasant to the eye for me - without any deeper meaning. =)

I could never get anything good out ofr fractal art. I admire those crazy 3D ones I see sometimes though, but the 2D ones tend to be more "arty-looking" :D Like many in the space and sci-fi genre I can muster up ones that are good for nebula creation and plasma effects and that's about it =p

I like the colour choices here though, and it's very smooth (I tend to settle for slightly grainier results lol)

I like to do these to take a break from my usual Vue related stuff. Here it's much more about instinct and trying to get a flow and harmony into the picture. The opposite of the often very technical approach Vue demands. =) And yes absolutely... it could easily be used to create a nebula  for a space scene. Especially since the renders come with an alpha channel. Easy to place in your space pic. :D

I had no idea I could alpha channel them, I just set them to screen or linear dodge and that eliminates the blackness showing anyway, and for darker dust clouds I just invert it and set it to multiply :D
