This one was in the works for quite some time now. I’m not entirely happy with the results but i did my best to make it look somewhat interesting. Again it’s a try in digital matte painting combining rendered elements with photo. A friend of mine always said that i need something snowy for my portfolio and so i did it. I did not have any specific concept in mind for this one except the fact that i wanted crystals in there. The photos i used are none of the ones i shot while visiting a friend in austria. Those will come handy in later projects. The crystals were modeled in C4d and imported into Vue. There i created an eco system and painted them onto the landscape. Worked pretty good! Only the integration process in Photoshop was quite difficult. Some pieces are fun to work on and others can become quite heavy work. This one was work. Nonetheless i hope the stormy mountain atmosphere works and you’ll get some goosebumps from the cold the image shows!

Beautiful, the environment, climate and weather is portrayed in a fantastic manner. It makes me feel chilly just looking at this piece. The beautiful lighting and gentle glows from the ice crystals really make this feel like a magical lake. Great work, with wonderful detail :)

Blue Tiberium!! :ohnoes:

I'm sure Command and Conquer was totally not an inspiration for this though. Awesome anyway!

LOL EagleFox, it got me too. I thought it was too for a good second. But then the scientist in me denied its existence.

However, awesome work! The fact that it could fool people just demonstrates your prowess with this medium. :worship:

Reminds me of command and conquerer and certain areas in World of Warcraft. Like ~xxRiKu said, Ammen Vale it is. ^^;

Still, incredibly beautiful. I think you captured the feel of the area really well. It's insanely cold and a pretty unforgiving area if you venture into it on your own.

Your methods for making crystals are exactly the same as mine, mad ein Cinema 4D (I ususally start with with a 6-sided cylinder and drag the top into a pencil-shape :XD:) then import e'm into Vue...though I have only used this method once so far =p

Cool idea though, crystals are often included into snow-stages in games and such too, probably for their "icy" look :snowing:

BLUE TIBERIUM! <.<
Sorry...... It is rather odd you didn't get Inspiration from the C&C series, despite the similarities here. No matter tho, Still nicely done. -12 thumbs up.-

I actually thought Tiberium as well :-) Very nice looking piece man, I love the color of this one and the phot is an amazing base.

I think the crystals look a bit more believable in the distant field that in the water. I think more pronounced ice fractures around where they come out of the water would add to the realism. I was impressed by the reflections in the water though - good job! It is good to see your stuff again man - I hated being gone from DA that long.

Absolutely dig this! One of your cleaner, more refined pieces (perhaps due to it being more work?) and crystals are just awesome anyway - throw in some icy coldness and you've got some class-A looking mattepainting here! My only qualm with it would be that the crystal clumps are all around the same size and perhaps too numerous in the background - I find myself wanting to look at the beautiful crystal blue of the unique ones, but getting distracted by the bunch in the backrgound. Love the two huge ones there though! :)

you're right about the crystals having the same size. i never noticed that tbh. a bit more variation could have helped there indeed. =) most of the work went into the thinking process this time. how to arrange the pic. wasn't easy with this one. that's why i'm not too happy with it. when you struggle too much it always leaves a bad taste somehow. =) that's when 'taste' kicks in. just because i don't like it... doesn't mean other people think the same. thanks for your feedback sir :nod:

Of course haha... every artist is over-critical of their work, especially if they take their time with it! And a piece is never done, the artist just stops working on it. xD You're welcome, I shall continue to provide feedback if it's appreciated. :)

(That last part may just be subjectivity on my part, and the problem is fixed when I blur my eyes slightly - makes the composition stand out as a whole, which looks cool) ;p
