Why I'm Not a Brony
by Daniel Fouste

My name is Daniel, and I'm not a Brony.

Calm down. Before you accuse me of heresy and sacrilege, let me explain.

I like the show, okay? Granted, I've only seen a few episodes, but from what I've seen, it's a pretty decent show. Hell, it almost made me interested in MLP again (I have memories of watching the earlier generations on the Disney Channel). Almost.

But in the end, I can't bring myself to watch the show even casually, because of how insane the fanbase has gotten at this point.

Again, don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to diss the fans, I happen to have a friend who's a Brony, he dresses up as Rainbow Dash when he goes to events and conventions. But let's not kid ourselves: the fanbase has gotten insane.

And because of this, I have no choice but to put the "overrated" label on the whole damn thing.

Overrated. A word that I know some Bronies/Pegasisters don't use in their vocabulary. Or at least, misinterpret it. But that's what I have to call it.

A while back, I stumbled across this video on YouTube made by one of the more insane Bronies, in which he interpreted his own meaning of the word "overrated." In his mind, overrated means something that doesn't live up to everyone's expectations. Well, excuse me, dipshit, but the word you're thinking of is "disappointment." If you consider something of a lower quality than what everybody else thinks, then it's overrated. Seriously, don't you ever read a dictionary?

And this is why it's hard for me to be really snarky about this, because I know Lauren Faust is somewhat of a genius - I say "somewhat" because her husband is Craig McCracken, a man, in my opinion, whose visual style has always outclassed his storytelling. (I was a huge fan of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends back in the day, but I ended up bailing out after a year after it turned into The Mac & Bloo Show, with the supporting characters being just that - supporting characters. Not to mention the blatant fanservice it started using after only less than a year on the air.) And I'm glad Faust, or the current showrunners, hasn't turned into a total Ryan Murphy-level asshole, telling people, "If you don't like what I'm doing, tough!" (One of several reasons why I don't watch Glee - give me an old, campy episode of Fame anyday. This practice is also used by certain fanfic authors I won't even discuss, because I've had my fill of ranting about them.) If she, or the current showrunners, has turned into an asshole, I haven't heard about it.

No, the real reason why I don't watch My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, aside from how insane the whole package has become at this point, is this: have you ever heard of a show called Ruby Gloom?

Okay, if you've never seen Ruby Gloom, tune out right now and go check it out on YouTube or wherever you watch videos. If you have, feel free to continue reading.

I've been a fan of Ruby Gloom even before the Hub Network existed; I think it's a wonderfully well-written show with memorable characters and a cool universe it inhabits, and I'm really ashamed nobody in the U.S. (not even Hub, with all the cabbage they're probably making off MLP right now) has picked this up yet. (It's a Canadian series, in case you don't know.) And that's the thing: I'm guessing nobody bothered to pick it up in the U.S. because they'll think it's just bland and uninteresting - unlike MLP, with its "epic" (seriously, could there be a more overrated word than that? Other than "fun," maybe, but I like fun) storytelling and higher levels of marketability (Ruby, I should add, is based on a now-defunct clothing line from Mighty Fine).

But that's not why I'm comparing those two. The thing about MLP: FIM that sticks in the back of my mind is that I look at the kind of non-"epic" stories the show does, and I could easily imagine the gang from Gloomsville telling the same stories. Just swap Twilight with Ruby, Rainbow Dash with Iris, the happy-go-lucky Pinkie Pie with the hilariously glum Misery, etc., and replace sunny Equestria with dark-clouded Gloomsville as the setting, and you'd get a typical Ruby Gloom storyline. (However, if there's one thing I prefer MLP: FIM on, it's that when it comes to mischievous boy-like characters, Spike does it far better than Boo Boo ever did. Don't get me started.)

And that's the thing: if I want to watch Ruby Gloom, I'll watch Ruby Gloom. I'm okay with that. I've always had a fondness for choosing the lesser-known over the better-known. SCTV over Saturday Night Live, Fame over Glee, the lesser-known works of Hiro Mashima (i.e., Monster Soul) over Fairy Tail. I don't need to watch Ruby Gloom, but with ponies and a much more sunnier-looking universe, to be satisfied. (As for the fanbase, Peter Paltridge of the Platypus Comix website once compared it to Scientology with ponies. I'll just leave it at that.)

So yeah, this is why I'm not a Brony.

Please don't kill me.
What the title says. Originally written August 16, 2013 and slightly revised.

I was originally going to talk about Cloppers, since that was what cemented my non-Brony status, but let's not go there and say we did.

+-I am a brony, but I sorta agree with you, the fan base is insane, and the cloppers are - Actually, I don't think I'll talk about them...
But I do quite like the show, I only watched it because the Irony ya know...
But I do quite like what you said, you wern't saying
Yep, That sums it upbut you made a good concept of why you don't like MLP.

I didn't say I don't like MLP (although considering how much Hasbro is shoving Equestria Girls down a lot of fans' throats, that could be a possibility in the future), I'm just disillusioned with the fanbase. That's all. Of course, I'm also disillusioned with my generation (the Millennials) as a whole, but that's another story.

Still, thanks for the comment, and also thanks for the fave on one of my other deviations.

Yeah, I didn't mean it in that way, but I am just so glad you didn't put it in a way of this genoration, which sadly, I am a part of.
Oh and no problem :3
