Sand. Sand everywhere.
I've gotten used to it.
Oh yes, it's been here for awhile. A time longer than I've ever expected. I tried counting the days. The years. But that stopped sometime ago as my mind is turning.
There is no track of precise time, just the sun and moon. No magic involved in picking them up, there never really was. I think it was just for more fame and power. Ha. Fame and power don't exist anymore in Equestria. If i should even call it that anymore. This land doesn't deserve the name. No recognizable buildings anymore in the monstrous reality. Nothing in this realm that provides hope.
Equestria died a long time ago. My reign died with it. But i still remember, oh how beautiful my empire was, spanned across the world, made of the most luxurious materials, adorn of my golden flags, adorn of the most royal guards..
The most.. nice citizens. The most fantastic students. My own sister. The darkest thing but the most bright i would think. Brighter than me sometimes.
The last look into life in this.. place.
All gone.. Gone from a Alicorn's lifetime and mind ages ago. As my memory is sinking into itself. My old alluring hair turning fully grey and my skin turning into rash under the damn thing i once knew.
My hood and cloak is getting worn, had it for too long it's fading into the sand now. If i still had my grateful crown or boots, i bet they would be rusted and sunk down into garbage. It's just been that long. Long enough for new things to die. In the lands of the dead.
I can't imagine what i look like in the storm of the wasteland, a piece of filth like a beggar on the streets asking for coin. But no one knows me anymore. I'm simply something from a forgotten time. A forgotten throne. From a forgotten conflict i can't even remember the name of anymore.
All things get forgotten in the end i suppose. It's the thought that counts.
I wish my Sparkle was remembered as long as i was. She had her reign of course after mine but it never turned to be like mine. Thousands of years, though there was always a twist in it involving friendship. As they say, you can't be friends with everyone you meet. I wish i could have saw her again, she was a fierce warrior of her time and one of the most legendary in the lands. Some outside Equestria probably still pray for her.
She got a fancy tomb as well, one carved of the most fine stone and granite inside a mountain the size of many hoofs. She was buried with her generals, her friends, her allies.
She really was a great kid.
And here i am, living longer than anyone in this land. The irony is there will be no grave for me for anyone to dig. I'm starting to like it that way, peaceful and docile. Nothing to eat my body but time itself.
The feeling of overwhelming death i had for too many years is nothing more than a walk in the park now. A walk in the desert. A slow sleep and you will always rest.
All the times i had from the beginning of my story are astonishing, longstanding, and even deathless. That was once my nickname, The Deathless, since i could never be killed in a honorable duel.
Ha... Good times.
I've been walking for a eternity but i think i now need a long rest. A long rest from which new champions might be born. New realms of which none of my kind will ever see.
Not many words to speak, so I think i'll just lay here with the desert.
Yes, the sand.
What's the point of living forever if no one can be eternal with you.
I've been alive longer than death probably has existed in this world. It is time to meet him again.
For once, the sand is smooth.
Something startled Roan late at night, he just couldn't point it out.
Maybe it was a cat or dog on the street, and maybe even something breaking in the neighborhood. But his eyes opened quick as ever through the darkness of his empty apartment. He felt cold even though it was a summer night.
He got up from his bed, it was so dark outside, the reflecting window next to him was fully closed and all he could see was the slimmer of the pavement next to him.
Roan whispered. "Huh. Strange."
As he slightly yawned looking through the window, he heard a ghastly sound behind him. It wasn't wind but a mire voice.
It was right outside his door. That got him up alright. In the abyss of night, his heart was beating as a intruder was in his apartment. He couldn't think of anything besides what was behind that door.
"WHO'S THERE?!" he shouted. No answer. He opened the bedroom door quickly and jumped back to the side, ready to attack anything that came from it. Nothing. Absolutely nothing but the dark.
Roan walked back from it. He was still cautious with every step he took. His eyes never blinking and never fading from the door that looked into the void. He seemed to bump someone heavy behind him but that was nimpossible, there was only one exit from his bedroom. He looked behind him as he was pushed back on the carpet.
As he shrieked, he looked up. There was a figure in the darkness, just standing there and looking at him. He looked absolutely dead.
A orange cat.
Roan couldn't speak. "Who. Are. You?"
"Casey. Casey H-artley."
Roan got up as slowly as he could, he stared into the cat's eyes and they were almost fully white, a bit of grey fading into it.
"Casey-y? How ..? Why?" Roan really couldn't think under the stress and the bags under his eyes, his mind was exploding with thought. Casey didn't move closer and stood in the pitch dark.
"I found you because you have hope here. Because you're new. Because you don't know our history yet. I want you to do something for me. Something you might be good at."
Roan walked straight up to his shadow, "Hey i don't have to do anything befo-" And he was gone like a cut film. And Roan was left alone, with his mouth half open. His bedroom door was wide open and window bled darkness. The only thought he could come to terms to was it was some form of sleepwalking.
The wolf shaking his head, went back to his sheets and layed on his back, and for a minute felt peace and comfort, before something or someone stabbed him in the shoulder. He shocked and found the same cat staring at him, now sitting on the side of his bed. Roan now shouted, he was becoming a mad man in his own house.
"What do you.. WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME DUDE?"
"One thing." Casey put his hand on roan's leg, and Roan felt every part of it like he was a actually person. It was like ice. ".. Just one thing."
"Find my friend. Find the only people who cared for me. Find Mae Borowski."
Mae Borowski, he remembered that name from everywhere yesterday. Without much thinking, he asked the semi friend-stranger on his bed a question.
"Who is this Mae Borowski? Why is she so important?!"
His grey eyes flickered. "She makes this town what it is." Casey Hartley smiled.
"I'll guide you all the way, man. Until you find her, until the summer is at peace."
The wolf blinked once more and the mate was gone from his sight.
The rest of the night was Roan figuring out what the hell just happened to him and being dazed from being afraid to sleep one more time. He went to his bedroom's bathroom. It was tiny but comfortable in small instances. The mirror slightly rusted, Roan looked at himself in the yellow light.
"What is wrong with me. I just saw a ghost. No something in my mind."
In about 5 in the morning, he forgot about it and took his jacket to walk outside a little bit. He closed his door one last time looking into his apartment.
The cold and damp morning wasn't the worst, it was the lack of people he could talk to and have a drink around here. He decided to go see Germ and see if he didn't have his eyes shut too early. The chilling concrete of the ominous forest town was enough to give him goosebumps, even as cars pasted by.
Warton's house was on the outskirts of the woods. Near a old coal mine and well they said. Pretty mysterious but he didn't judge it. His previous cousins lived in the deep Rockies, as established hunters, and junkies as he found out later.
The Spring woods in 5 in the morning were quite literally dead and twisted like vines, the only sound being wind creeping around the trees and dirt.
As he got there Germ was sitting there with his black cap, on a trunk of a mossy tree. watching the forest infront of him and obviously thinking about things. Before he even looked around, he heard the crackling footsteps behind him and asked.
"Roan." The wolf muttered.
The bird had a half smile as he turned around to look at him.
"Well i didn't expect someone like you to wake up this early in the morning."
Roan talked about it. "No i don't. Something woke me up."
Jeremy's brief expression faded into the darkness. "Hmm?"
"A dream? A nightmare? More like a hallucination of that missin' kid, Casey Hartley."
Germ like a statue, kept his green eyes on the the wolf.
The wolf noticed this, as Germ was peering into his soul. "Uh.. Germ?"
"Did you say C-Casey Hartley...?"
Jeremy was very silent. he couldn't think of what to say for one of the first times in his life. Tears slightly rolled across his face and on to the dirt. Germ put down his cap slowly and crushed it in his face.
"Case. Oh Case.. Don't remind me.. Please don't.. I'm not Germ anymore. I'm not young anymore. Casey. Gregg and Angus.. Rabies. Angel. and now.. Mae.."
Sadly Roan didn't go to question Germ further, the little bird looked pretty depressed and shocked. Instead Roan came closer to him and put his rugged hand on his shoulder.
"I'm not sure.. what they all meant to you, but this 'spirit' told me to find Mae. Said he would guide me one way or another."
Germ took his face from the sable hat, and looked up at him with his teary eyes. "You got a really crazy mind Roan, and a crazy story. Or we got something completely different on our hands."
Roan looked at the forest. "I bet you're right. I bet you're damn right."
Usually you wouldn't have a talk that would last until sunrise, but Roan and Germ sure did. Blue filling up the sky and the sun being as blinding as ever.
Germ finally took the chance Roan talked about, he really didn't have anything better to do but find his friends. "Fine. I guess i can go on one more adventure out there." And he thought of something. "Hmm.. Let me show you someone. He could help us."
Roan asked once again. "Who, who are we visiting?"
