The Voice of Kibo

And now we come to Kibo. Since I’ve been on such a Sleepy Hollow kick lately, I couldn’t imagine anyone better to voice him than Matt Barr, who played Nick Hawley during Season 2 of the series. Hawley serves as a perfect character foil to Ichabod Crane—their speech, personalities, and motivations are complete opposites, often putting them at odds in amusing and competitive ways. While Ichabod is driven by duty and a higher purpose, Hawley is all about profit. He sees the End of Days less as a world-ending crisis and more as a chance to collect and sell rare artifacts. Ichabod views Hawley as a self-serving "privateer," while Hawley mocks Ichabod’s old-fashioned ways with nicknames like "Shakespeare" and "Pride and Prejudice."

That dynamic really reminded me of the relationship between Kibo and his brother, Mukasa. They’re both cut from the same cloth, yet vastly different in temperament. Mukasa is deeply influenced by Queen Kiara’s teachings, taking his future role as king very seriously, always absorbing the wisdom she imparts with the intention of someday passing it on to his own cubs. Kibo, on the other paw, can be quite the opposite. He’s proud—maybe even a bit too proud at times—and tends to take things less seriously. But when it truly matters, especially in his role within his sister’s Lion Guard, he steps up with strength and purpose.

Like Hawley, Kibo also has a reputation for being a charmer. In his younger years, he’s known for being flirtatious and catching the attention of many lionesses in the pride. However, as he matures, Kibo outgrows that behavior. His flirtation fades as he becomes more genuine—especially when he realizes his true feelings for Nzuri.
