Sleepy Hollow: Lionized.

FINALLY!!! I've been working on this side project for a few weeks now and wanted to finally get it posted. So for those of you who may not know I'm very much a MEGA HUGE FAN of the American supernatural drama tv series "Sleepy Hollow" this aired on Fox from September 16, 2013, to March 31, 2017 but for me who lives in Canada it aired on Global. I really loved this show and still love it to this day I have it all 4 Seasons on DVD. So basically the series is loosely based on the 1820 short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving with added concepts from "Rip Van Winkle" also by Irving. The first three seasons are set in a fictionalized version of Sleepy Hollow, New York, which portrays the town as much larger than it actually is. For the fourth and final season, the setting moved to Washington, D.C..

So just to give a run down of the show In 1781, Ichabod Crane works for George Washington as a double agent. Crane beheads a Horseman, who does not die. In desperation, Crane kills him with a mutually fatal blow. Crane next awakens in 2013 Sleepy Hollow, with Washington's Bible to guide him. He meets Sheriff's Lt. Abigail Mills and learns that the Horseman has also returned. Crane learns that he and Abbie are the two Witnesses of Revelation, and the Horseman is Death. Should he regain his severed head, his master, Moloch, would be released from Purgatory and the End of Days would occur. Crane also learns that his wife, Katrina, a witch, was banished to Purgatory for saving him. His blunder has linked his life with the Horseman's. Fighting off Moloch's army of demons, Crane discovers that the Horseman of War is his own son, Jeremy Crane/Henry Parish, who loathes Crane and Katrina for abandoning him. Crane also learns that "Headless" is actually his former friend, Abraham Von Brunt.

I've decided to lionize what I think are some of the shows more important characters. There are others that could have done but it's these four that really stand out to me and especially kept me tuning in week after week. That being in order as shown Ichabod Crane, Grace Abigail Mills, who went by Abbie, Jennifer "Jenny" Mills, and finally Katrina Crane.

Ichabod Crane

Highly intelligent, humorous, and methodical, Crane is very much a duty-driven and selfless man. Deeply loyal to his friends, Crane has a strong sense of honor and values it above most other considerations excepting his duty as a Witness. He has repeatedly displayed his great selflessness and devotion to the greater good, and was willing to let Abraham and Katrina marry despite his own love for Katrina, showing clear discomfort towards the idea of Katrina betraying his best friend's trust. When Abraham lashed out at him, Crane was unwilling to harm him and engage him fully, and held back. Although he was outraged by Abraham's deal with Moloch, Crane regrets how his own actions led to his friend's downfall. He even said he wanted Abraham to be redeemed, and was willing to allow Katrina to find the spell to remove his Horsemen powers. Despite his outstanding skills, he was never known to be arrogant or condescending and could acknowledge any contribution others made, and show great respect to those who deserved it.

He would willingly sacrifice himself without hesitation for the greater good, evidenced when he calmly agreed to kill himself so as to kill Death as well, and was only stopped by his son in his guise of Henry Parish and his fellow Witness. He is a strong-willed man with the mental strength to deal with deep emotional scarring and depression.

He is, to a remarkable extent, despite all his family members have done to him, a good family man. He still deeply cared for Katrina, even after her betrayal, and was devastated by her death. He also loved his son, despite having never known him, and despite his fundamental opposition; he never truly lost all faith in Henry, and often tried to talk him around and make Henry see reason. He was hopeful when Henry killed Moloch, and showed concern for his well-being. The deaths of his family hit him hard, and he will never let himself off the hook for that very easily, even though he knows he was doing the right thing. He would not want anyone to see how much he was hurting, he wanted to get on with it. Henry and Katrina made their decision to turn dark; Crane and Abbie made their decision to fight against it, and that is the decision he has to live with, he has to be strong because they have other battles to fight, so he took a nine month sabbatical in order to recover and then soldiered on.

Despite having the means to later potentially kill Henry, having the Philosopher Stone and a weapon capable of harming a Horsemen, Crane did not resort to such means and reasoned with his son instead, showing a deep level of sorrow when Jeremy agreed to a truce but told his father he would never forgive him.

Abbie Mills

Abbie is a tenacious and courageous woman, often putting other’s needs above her own. Abbie, however, keeps a tight reign on her emotions. As a result she is often reserved and slow to anger, but beneath the tough exterior is woman who feels very deeply. She is empathetic, as displayed in her repeatedly choosing to attempt to talk down perps rather than make shows of force. She also has a soft spot for children, while fighting against the Pied Piper she essentially offered herself up as bait is order to track down a missing girl. Abbie is also both patient and kind. She is an good teacher, introducing Crane to the modern world with efficiency and ease. She lets him come to his own conclusions and guides him without patronizing. Furthermore, she was the only person to suspect that Crane wasn’t crazy from the onset, and might have been telling the truth about his identity. On his first night in his hotel room, she makes sure to place sticky notes all around his room explaining how to turn on the lights and make coffee, take a shower, or watch television, “it's like theatre.” Abbie is knowledgeable, practical, intelligent, and at times calculating. She has a knack for profiling and her skills helped track down both Henry Parish and Abraham Van Brunt. She is also very curious. When she first meets the angel, Orion, she jokes with him and asks about dinosaurs. Orion calls her clever. Abbie ultimately has a skeptical bent. She initially pushes back against the idea of the supernatural, and though she does eventually commit fully to the cause, she continues to question why she was chosen. She is the first to offer up science as an alternative to magic, regularly finding ways to resourcefully replace spells with generators, chemistry, and ultraviolet light. Abbie has dealt with a lot of hurt in her life. As teenager she went down a dark path though she not once lashed out at others. Those experiences left her guarded but also wise; she understands that sometimes love isn’t enough. Abbie can and does make tough decisions. She killed her friend, Andy Brooks, in order to give him peace. She also frequently argued the necessity of killing Henry, and was proven correct in the end, and by pulling the trigger herself saved Crane from carrying the burden of killing his own son. Abbie has shown to be both protective and loyal to those close to her, caring for their well-being. When her mentor, August Corbin, was killed, she was devastated by his death. She worked to save his son, Joe Corbin, even when everyone else thought hope was lost. Crane, Jenny, and Frank particularly have benefited from her steadfast and heartfelt care.

Jenny Mills

When Jenny and Abbie were in high school, they saw four white trees and a figure they couldn't make out. They saw this figure raise a man from the ground but soon forgot much of the detail since Moloch removed their memory. Neither one of them remembered what happened next, they blacked out and ended up far from where they started near a road. They felt they had been unconscious for a few minutes when in actuality it had been four days. They were then found by local farmer Garrett Gillespie during a search for them. Abbie and Jenny never really recovered from the experience. Abbie knew there would be consequences for telling the truth, and begged Jenny to keep her mouth shut about what happened. Jenny didn't listen and admitted to seeing a demon. Abbie, frightened of the consequences of such an admission, lied and said she saw nothing. Jenny was then incarcerated in an asylum because of her insistence the vision was real. By the time she was 17, she had been almost a dozen foster homes, and finally she was then arrested by Sheriff August Corbin for shoplifting. Instead of booking her, Corbin let her go and gave her access to his cabin at Trout lake. During this time, Jenny had been possessed by the demon, Ancitif, who made her try and kill her sister. Jenny tried to keep distance between then so she would never act on the demonic promptings. She was finally freed from Ancitif by Corbin. Before the demon left her, it told Corbin that the Horseman of Death would kill him, and he would kill Jenny's sister. After that, Jenny helped Corbin collect occult items from the around the world. During that time, she traveled to place such as Somalia and Mexico, taking down drug dealers and smugglers in pursuit of artifacts.

Katrina Crane

Early in the Revolutionary War, Katrina posed as a Quaker nurse and asked that she be allowed to treat Arthur Bernard's wounds suffered during British interrogation. It was during this time that Katrina met British Army Lieutenant, Ichabod Crane. She and Bernard were able to convince Crane to defect, knowing that he was a good man. Katrina then treated Crane's wounds after Bernard was killed by Col. Banastre Tarleton. During this time, Katrina's father arranged for her to marry Abraham Van Brunt. During her engagement, she met Crane's possessive ex-fiancée Mary Wells, who believed that Katrina was trying to steal Crane from her. Katrina was then aggressively confronted by Wells, who tripped and fell off a cliff to her death. Katrina then forged a letter for Crane and hid Mary's death from him. Abraham always bought her ostentatious gifts, and was about to buy a rather gaudy necklace for her when he asked Crane's opinion. Crane suggested a simpler necklace. He knew her better than Abraham did, and knew it was simplicity she liked. She eventually broke off the engagement with Abraham to be with Crane. She told van Brunt that she could never make him truly happy, and she told Crane that her heart belonged to him. While her husband was a captain serving under General George Washington in the 37th Regiment, Katrina worked a civilian nurse attached to his regiment. After Crane fell in battle, Katrina chose to preserve his life through magic. Her coven chained the Horseman's body in a coffin and sent it the bottom of the river, knowing it shared a blood connection with Crane. Her coven, the Sisterhood of the Radiant Heart, then banished her to Purgatory for her actions, and for her refusal to reveal Crane's hiding place. Katrina hid Crane in a cave after he beheaded the Horseman, they demanded she reveal his location, but she refused. After Katrina is banished to Purgatory, she spends the next 231 years as a prisoner of Moloch. After the Horseman, and therefore her husband, were raised by Moloch, Henry Parish, a powerful warlock, contacted her and gave her the information concerning a Sin Eater who could break the bond between Horseman and Witness. She passed this information on to Abbie in a vision. She also appeared to her husband in a dream in which she informed him of some of the secrets she had kept from him, and told him of his duty as the First Witness. He must prevent the Horseman from retrieving his head, reaching full power, and summoning the other three horsemen thereby bringing about the end of the world. Katrina then begs her husband to rescue her. When Crane and Abbie devise a way into Purgatory, Katrina is freed after Abbie agrees to take Katrina's place temporarily, since it is Katrina's power that is needed to halt the rise of War. They then meet with Henry Parish, whom Katrina knows as the Sin Eater, and make their way to the place where the Horseman of War is supposed to rise. When her spells fail, Henry reveals that he is actually their son Jeremy, and that he is the Horseman of War. He has risen already and his parents are now his prisoners. Henry then gives Katrina to the Headless Horseman, who rides off with her.

If you ever want to watch the series it's on Disney+ I'm only sorry that it was cancelled after 4 Seasons but it will always be a series I will revisit and carry with me for years to come I'll leave a preview video below if you're interested in watching the series for yourself.
