Description

Goldilocks, robber of kings. The name coursed through the realm where the light wouldn't reach. Goldilocks was the known master thief who plundered relics like nothing. Some said her golden hair that gleamed like the sun was actually stolen fire, as punishment for deceiving the gods. But now she had a new target, the House of Bears, a manor not built but grown in black stone fused with roots, its towers wrapped in ivy that breathed faintly like lungs. Goldilocks had heard of the three vaults within.

The first was carved into the bone of the earth itself, sealed by a lock that pulsed like a heart. She pressed her ear to it, listening to the heartbeat. Too hard. It demanded blood, and hers was not enough.

The second was gilded with enchantments, glowing faintly as though cradled by invisible hands. Too soft. An offering vault, left for thieves to plunder, so they might leave satisfied and cursed.

The third was neither alive nor enchanted. It stood in a chamber of cold ash, its metal door etched with claw marks. Old magic lingered in the seams. Just right.

She used her daggers and tools to pick the lock and it slid open with ease. Inside was no treasure. Only a golden timepiece, heavy and warm, its face etched with a crest of three crowned beasts. The second hand ticked backward. She knew this artifact: Ursa’s Heart, the anchor of an ancient pact. Whoever held it could unchain the Bears from their oath of slumber.

The floorboards trembled. The air thickened, ripe with musk and rot. Shadows peeled from the walls, stretching into forms with claws and teeth.

"Someone is trespassing in our home," boomed a rumbling voice. Goldilocks turned and saw, not people, but three bears, fur matted with blood, their eyes lit like coals. Regal, monstrous, cursed. She tucked the timepiece into her cloak, the ticking like a second heart.

"Someone's been sleeping too long," she said, drawing her dual blades.
