This is me blogging! I know strange isn't it, I said I would, then I said I wouldn't and I now I am. Go Figure.
Well there has been a lot of false starts with my writing, but I guess you have to start putting fingers to keys eventually.
What has finally motivated me to finally post a blog? The Recession? The Government? Biblical flooding in the southern hemisphere? All good topics but no, I come to you to talk about television.
I have been a long time fan of Film and Television like most people on the planet and like most I have an opinion and mutliple outlets to express them with; Over the past couple of years life could not get better for the fan of general sci-fi, However whilst Superhero's are busy saving the summer box office alongside the Na'vi and quasi-drunk pirates, and whilst games consoles are packing titles with more budget than a small country, I have noticed that it is the humble TV show that has really come into its own. I mean I love the Summer blockbusters as much as the next person but these days I find my self more excited by the next season of True Blood or Supernatural than I am about any single movie coming out this summer or next.
Now I have my reasons, I have always been a huge fan of television shows, I still watch the original Twilight Zone, I even own the DVD's to the much lamented Robocop series, and every episode of the X-Files and even The first (and only) season of The Lone Gunmen! but my apparently poor taste aside, I find that a season based TV show has much more to offer than film. Depending on length you could have anywhere from 12 to 24 hours to build up the characters, people have the time to get to know the characters, they see them develop and its depth that can only be achieved over time, the lucky shows sometimes have a decade to develop, fans of Smallville, The X-Files and SG1 were all sad when the shows eventually left the screen but have 10 years of memories, the up's the downs and those times when the same day just keeps repeating itself! (Check - each show had one)But I am not here to simply explain why I am more a fan of TV than Film.
Television I do believe has entered a golden age, many will attribute the begining of this to Lost, although it is debatable, the point however remians that we have been treated to shows with ever increasing budgets and production values, now I point out a few that can be used as examples being True Blood, V, Supernatural and The Walking Dead, but it they are supplmented by shows such as Chuck, Bones, Castle and The Big Bang Theory, even dare I add Glee. Now I do not watch all of these shows, but the one's I do watch always have me aching for the next episode and many deliver content worthy of my inflated expectations. It is these shows that dominate my excitement for the coming year, Yes I am interested in the Green Lantern movie and I am excited about the Avengers, but I absolutely will not miss the next Season of The Walking Dead or the next episode of True Blood.
Not all episodes, seasons or even shows will be great and I am not saying that past shows are not as good as current ones but I think we are very lucky at the moment to have the quality we do have and I feel many are quick to critisise without thinking how much quality there is out there on the television.
Thanks for reading guys!
My next blog will probably be more work related but I thought this would be a good place to start after all everyone watches TV...Right?

I've always put films first, but after reading this I think it might be more for their presentation and visual flair than their characters or stories. Shows like True Blood or Supernatural allow us to delve deeper and further than any film into the characters and the situation they are in. The reason the first season of Heroes was so monumental was that as we came to know each character we cared about the situations they were in, granting us an emotional stake in their adventures. This is something that film cannot grant us. They don't have the time to develop the characters properly. Even computer games have started having trouble giving us an emotional interest in our characters, despite making us inhabit them. It's why Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was praised but Two Worlds was ridiculed.
