The Champion by thornwolf The Champion by thornwolf
My submission for there 2012 Werewolf Calendar [link]
Ordering starts September 1st!

"The Champion" - 11"x14" watercolor and colored pencil on Arches watercolor paper - A clan's most powerful and celebrated warrior being ceremoniously painted for battle.

Here was my assigned writeup:
Both wild and urban werewolves have both been occasionally spotted wearing body paint. The precise and definite reasons for this behavior are as yet unknown, though it is speculated to play a part in the ceremonial celebrations and rituals werewolf society partakes in. It has also been suggested that body paint may play an important role in courtship rituals, allowing each werewolf to stand out individually. Body paint may be ornate or fairly minimal depending on the region or whether the werewolf resides within an urban or wild setting. Urban werewolves have access to a wide variety of artificial pigments, readily available for purchase whereas wild werewolves are often limited to natural found pigments composed of ground stones, berries and other plant material. As colorful displays are a detriment to everyday life, especially the ability to camouflage during a hunt, body paint is thought to be restricted in use for ceremonial occasions only.

The blue these guys use as paint-material reminds me of what they said the Iceni used! Awesome work!

In case you're interested...
The Iceni lived in South-South-West to South-West of England, and were some of the first to encounter the Romans. They were one of the least friendly Briton tribes in England toward the Romans. Possibly because of the way they were being treated by the Romans.
Eventually this led to a large-scale rebellion, known as the Rebellion of the Celtic/Barbarian Queen, who was named Boudica. After some time of pillaging and burning Roman-friendly settlements, a final famous battle was fought against the Romans, known as the Battle of Watling Street 60 AD.
She led 230.000 rebellious Britons of the Iceni and allied tribes, including women and children, against a far inferior number of 10.000 Romans led by Gaius Suetonius Paulinus.
The Britons were painted for war, mostly the light-blue as shown in this picture, and each warrior with weapons of their own choice, varying from spears to long swords and from medium to no armour at all because they were forbidden to wear weapons by the Romans in previous years. Whereas the Romans were each having the same weapons, shields and armour, with far superior discipline and tactics.
The results were devastatingly in favour of the Romans! A low casualty rating of 400 Roman soldiers against 80.000+ Britons, including the women and children who were stuck at the wagons that were positioned behind the Iceni battle line. Boudica and her rebellion were crushed as a result, and Roman authority was definite.

Anyway, sorry if I got carried away there :XD: Bit of a military/Roman history freak lol

I sincerely appreciate the tip. I've contacted them to have it removed. They had the audacity to remove my copyright information, that I am NOT okay with.

fairly well done. my Klan uses paint for rituals, and battle. for telling what Klan we belong to, lycans have their Klan symbols tattooed on their flanks. for rank, we have facial, and chest markings. i am an acolyte (shaman in training), and i have just started training to be an alpha. i have the incomplete alpha mark on my forehead, and the incomplete shaman marking on my right breast.

And now, for some reason, all I can think of is Braveheart... XD
Dragonlord104 Featured By Owner Aug 24, 2011
Maybe the reason for that is the celtic feel this has.
BanditRingtail3 Featured By Owner Aug 25, 2011
That and the blue paint. XD I know they had that at one point in the movie.

I need to watch that thing all the way through one day. I mostly just know the last hour or so.

excellent. This is a great peice. I love the painter and the one "arming" the champion. I like the explenation that its for cerimonial occasions. I see way to many painted were creatures trying to hunt lol.

Beautiful. Aaaand now Queen's "We are the champions" is going through my head. ;) Which completely doesn't fit your scene.

Wow Thornwolf, this is absolutely gorgeous! There is so much going on, the detailing is just wonderful. Not to mention, the
colors work so well together. The lovely earthy tones of the werewolves really stand out amidst the blue-jeweled apparel
and green grass. And the anatomy of each individual is great! I love how each look very focused on what they're engaged
in. Again, wonderful work!!!

I love the concentrated look on the warrior's face, and the drawings on the rocks in the background are a great touch. Very nice colouring as well.
