Several different takes on the Ningen ([link]), a hideous mythical humanoid sea monster of which I was unaware until seeing Tim's awesome depiction ([link]) the other night. Can we all say uncanny valley? The fact that the fake photos show them in at least two different forms--with arms but no legs, and with legs but no arms--got me thinking about parallels to the squid- and dragon-like forms of Cthulhu's Star-Spawn, and I started musing on the Ningen as a previously unknown species of polar Great Old One (Great Cold One?), maybe relatives of Cthulhu and/or Ithaqua, living in Antarctic waters and perhaps reemergent after long aeons of dormancy. It also got me thinking about an idea inspired by though not exactly expressed by Brian Lumley: that the Great Old Ones are so diverse in form because of a uniquely malleable genetic structure allowing them to breed and produce viable offspring with myriad other species from around the universe. Entire new hybrid races thus emerge from their profane dalliances with "lesser" mundane or conventional organisms, and the Ningen could be one of them. I was also thinking about the similar genetic malleability of the Deep Ones, and musing on the Ningen as an obscene hybrid of beluga whale and human. Other possibilities I considered are time-travelling far-future posthumans; panspermic hybrids recently transplanted (back?) to Earth by an unknown extraterrestrial agency for unknown reasons; or even alternate iterations of humanity leaking over from some adjoining quantum domain, almost like the "Angels" from Evangelion.

Thanks again to Tim Morris for introducing me to this icky new abomination!

Call me a wild dreamer, but I like to rationalize the ningen and all its varieties as some undiscovered lineage of arctic/antarctic cetacean that is redeveloping its limbs, digits and all, and assuming two paths in evolution: one path consists of cetaceans that are becoming intelligent to the point where they can develop technology of a sort and require dexterous appendages to manufacture tools (although prehensile tongues might also serve as an alternative [food for thought]), and the other path leads to the cetacean making a reversal transition back into land animal, as demonstrated in the legged varieties of ningen.

I'm so curious as to if this is ningen thing truly is real.

I seriously doubt it, but it would be awesome/scary if it were! XD

i'd be really interested if it were real. Its just so fun to think, "how cool would it be to see a humanoid life form on the planet, other than us?"

The photo of it walking on Antarctic ice just... disproportional

Yesterday, my friend showed me and article about this monster, now, I'm totally fan of it. I don't see it like you draw it, in the photograph by the way.
