Recovering Shuttle Cassini

U.S.S. Reliant recovers its shuttlecraft Cassini, after the shuttle has spent a week mapping and cataloging an unusually complex gas-giant moon system, while Reliant surveyed the gas-giant's solar system.

The Reliant has always been one of my favorite Trek designs, and I finally found a good, if older, Lightwave model of her. The Shuttle designed by Andy Probert for the Motion picture, is also my favorite of the shuttle designs shown in the movies. It was fun to put the two together.

Rendered in Lightwave 10.

Thanks for taking a look!

Yeah, she was my favorite as well. I ran FASA's Star Trek RPG years ago where the players crewed a ship in Reliant's class. One of my players was always bitching she didn't have enough guns. Yeah, that's exactly what Star Trek is about don't ya' know. Still a damned good ship.

Did the Reliant just fire an aft torpedo ?

Nope. That's a distant galaxy back there!

Okay - why she a fave ship?

Just a nosy sod who likes to hear passion.

Hmmm. A Good question. I think because it is a nice riff on the refit Enterprise design, using those components to create a very different silhouette. The proportions remain very aesthetically pleasing, and it makes sense, for a ship smaller and not quite as capable as the cruiser. And, it must be said, for me, personally. it has echoes of the Franz Joseph designs from the original Tech Manual (which I loved).

Hmm - love the reasoning! Thanks for sharing that - I like it because she was a tough well designed ship.

Roll Bar was inspired genius.

That shuttle was a vulcan design, wasn't it? The one that brought Spock aboard the Enterprise was named the Surak according to Memory Alpha. Great image though!

In the "Motion Picture" the shuttlecraft was a standard Federation design, as was the warpsled. The one we saw was registered to Vulcan. According to Andy Probert, the designer, and Shane Johnson, in "Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise" the Shuttle had two versions, the smaller version I illustrated here, and a larger, long range version that can be used with the warp sled for FTL travel. But both were the same wedge-shaped, functional design. They were attached to Starships and Star Bases. In some images of the matte paintings Probert did for "The Motion Picture" you can see one of them parked on the Enterprise's Hangar Deck. Also, in the recently re-issued and revamped "Vulcan Shuttle" model kit, there are decals for the Starfleet markings for both Shuttle and warpsled.

Woah. That sounded VERY grognardy, didn't it? :D Sorry about that, I guess I need that second cup of coffee. Thanks for the comment, and I'm glad you enjoyed the image!

Good old Reliant. Poor girl met a bad end.

Though, if the ship could have talked any, during that first encounter with Enterprise, Reliant would have been whispering 'Enterprise, this is a trap! Shoot at me! Blow me up! I've been commandeered by a megalomaniac!' And later, in the Mutara Nebula it was thinking 'Ouchh...nacelle gone...but the madman still lives...get this guy off my decks...what? Genesis Device...? RUN!! Run Enterprise!! Get outta here!!! Leave me!'

BYOO-TEA-FULL!!!!!!! I love the fact you're using the (well designed) TMP shuttle design and the overall blue tone is so calming and lovely. And I love the little spiral galaxy sneakin' in there :) You've made me love the Reliant again.

Thanks, my friend! She's a beautiful ship, she just needs a little TLC in lighting and posing.

Very cool, the Reliant design doesn't get enough exposure, in my opinion. Great to see her rendered by an artist of your caliber! :w00t:

Awww, thanks, Teri-Minx! There aren't that many meshes of Reliant floating around out there, I think that's a big reason she doesn't star in more renders. I had to do some post-production on the saucer and various details on this one--its an older model, and not really up to a close-up. I'm glad you liked it!

Hey, you should ask Dave M. if he'd do an OBJ export for you of his Reliant? It might be a more solid/detailed model: [link]

Shoot him a line! It can't hurt to ask.
