PSA ON SPECIES AND OCS

Sat Dec 13, 2014, 9:11 AM

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT EVER ASK SOMEONE IF THEY WOULD TURN THEIR OC INTO A SPECIES.
I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHY I HAVE TO EXPLAIN THIS BUT I SEE IT A LOT AND IT IS A LOT MORE UPSETTING THAN YOU MIGHT THINK.

Okay maybe I can explain this better with an example:

Imagine you have an OC you love dearly, you've owned them for a few months now but you haven't drawn them much. It could be something as simple as a cat with wings for ears or a complicated creature, even humanoid.

Now let's say you do draw them this time, and post up the drawing of your awesome wee bab that you love so much for the world to see.

One of the first comments you get? "Wow! I love it so much! Would you make this a species? I would buy so many!"

Now I know that the commenter only meant well, but saying something like this most certainly WON'T come off well, you need to sympathise a little. You have this OC that you love so much, and suddenly someone is coming along, dismissing you OC as being it's own CHARACTER and trying to get you to create a clone of your beloved OC so that they can have it, making your own creation less unique, and almost just a clone itself.

PEOPLE, IF YOU SEE A CREATURE YOU LIKE, WITH A TRAIT YOU LIKE, WHY NOT INSTEAD OF ASKING FOR IT TO BECOME A SPECIES, TRY TO TAKE INSPIRATION FROM IT AND CREATE YOUR OWN THING? PERHAPS EVEN TRY TO MAKE SOMETHING MORE UNIQUE AND CREATIVE?

FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU SAW  SOMEONE'S OC WHO HAPPENED TO BE A SORT OF QUADRUPED CREATURE WITH LONG BLADE CLAWS, AND YOU LIKED THE BLADE CLAWS IDEA, YOU COULD EXPERIMENT AND COMBINE WITH OTHER CREATURE IDEAS LIKE A RACCOON WITH A PREHENSILE TAIL TO CREATE SOMETHING FUN LIKE A LITTLE NINJA RODENT CREATURE WITH A BLADE FOR A TAIL. OR RETRACTABLE KNIFES ALONG ITS BACK. JUST GO WILD AND BE CREATIVE. SO LONG AS YOU DON'T TAKE THAT QUADRUPED KNIFE CLAWED CREATURE, AND JUST TURN IT INTO ANOTHER ANIMAL WITH KNIFE CLAWS, OR KEEP IT SIMILAR AND CHANGE THE COLOURS. TAKE INSPIRATION FROM IT AND EXPERIMENT AND ATTEMPT TO CHANGE THINGS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. YOU MIGHT END UP WITH SOMETHING YOU LIKED EVEN MORE THAN THAT ORIGINAL CHARACTER.

This doesn't happen all too often to myself, but I do see it a lot with other people ;^; and I just wanted to get this out there so that people can start to realise this. Please just try to have fun buying adopts of things which are already species or creature adopts or making your own unique little creations guys ;v; maybe then sympathising will be easier? Gahh...

i was actually terrified when species became a thing that i would get more of this than i do.  i do get the "you should turn this into a species" on my adoptables that i would rather keep as one-off creatures so they remain unique.

Yeah ;O; I still make creature adopts too, thankfully I don't get it comments like that on them as much, I guess because I put multiple different creatures on one sheet? I'm worried about making a sheet of similar creatures without having people ask if it's a species or not though, since I'm not so sure myself :/

ahhh, i'm sorry this upsets you, but its just your opinion i think :/
personally i love comments like that, it means they see your design as beautiful and original and unique enough to create a whole species around, and i'd just like... politely decline if I didn't want to, but i'd def be flattered

ehhhh if thats the way you feel about it thats fine! Maybe just put a note on your profile, something like "Please do not ask me for my characters or ask me to turn them into species. Thank you!"
cause some people might hate it, but others love it. Like me, if someone mssged me asking such a thing I would be honored and grateful that someone appreciated my design so much! Especially if they were willing to pay for their own, that is a big honor for me <3

 Either way, I hope you are doing well!

I agree so much and see how it could be insulting... Wouldn't bother me personally, because if I don't want to make it a species then I'm just not, no matter what anyone says. But I do see how it's kind of rude. Very good explanation.
