The new year came into Ashford City on a hard frost.
The snow that had started falling the afternoon Simon found Mrs. Petrov’s cat had kept up in fits through the end of December, and by the first week of January the Third District had settled into the grey compacted business of a city that had decided winter was now simply the condition of things. The river ran black between white banks. The trams threw grit. The war was a month old and had stopped being news in the way that a thing stops being news without stopping being true — it had become the weather everyone lived inside now, a low pressure behind every conversation.
The office was warm, for once. Simon had prevailed upon Hennessey on the strength of the cat business, and the radiator now produced heat rather than opinions.
