Today I Am Victorious, part 5
Today I am a soldier.  Brave, intimidating, ambitious.  A general.  My tent fills with the oily smoke of our lamps, the captains and strategists arrayed around me, planning dawn's battle.  Their voices add to the ones only I can hear, boring into my skull. A man with a crooked nose and a deferent manner intrudes.  "My lord general?  My lord, the king wishes to see you."  I nod. "Very well.  I'll report to him immediately." I push back from the table, trying to ignore the bickering of my companions.  Too many, too many people talking.  Too many thoughts, too many memories.  They aren't mine.  Mine got lost, abandoned long ago in the morass

Today I Am Victorious, part 4
Today I am a whore, seductive and expensive.  My clothes, like my bearing, are tailored to entice rather than reveal.  I stroll the sumptuous lobby of my madam's house, entertaining the guests with smiles and touches, catcalled and heckled by my permanent, imperceptible audience. A regular walks in and examines the merchandise.  He is fat and balding, even more powerful than he is rich, and as arrogant as both put together.  Unlike some regulars, he prefers to sample a new girl with every visit; tonight his eye falls on me.  I return his glance with a practiced smile, a smile that says he's exceptional, that he's handsome, that I'm intrigued

Today I Am Victorious, part 3
Today I am a friend, sympathetic and loyal.  My clothes are distinguished, but not ostentatious: a merchant's garb.  My friend has come to me today from another city—not an easy trip.  The two of us are chatting outside an expensive cafe in the respectable part of town.  He's more jittery than usual.  I make a quip about it, something about too much coffee.  The joke makes him suddenly serious.  The chorus thinks that's funny.  I see why, but the humor is lost. "Abe, I need your help," he whispers, leaning in close.  "I'm in trouble." He's afraid.  He's a fearful man.  He fears he's being tracked; an assassin.  His fears aren't quite

Today I Am Victorious, part 2
Today I am a father.  A stern, proud man.  I wear simple clothes, field clothes.  My son works the plow behind me as I work the horse.  The horse is young and stubborn.  So is the son.  The sun's heat is stubborn as well, but it is very old.  Older than me.  Older even than the earth, and just as silent. My son grows tired from the heat.  I wipe the sweat from my brow and suggest we take a break.  Half the field is tilled. We take refuge under the shade of a large tree at the edge of the field.  The horse grazes as we unpack our lunch.  The chorus mutters and stirs, and across the field a boy with a crooked nose and a scarred face approache

(Beginning) Once upon a time, there lived a young and beautiful girl.  Her hair was red as fire, and her laugh was as bright and sweet as a summer breeze.  The girl lived in a lush and verdant garden, and she wanted for nothing--yet the girl was sad, for she had a secret that she longed to share, but there was no one with her in her garden to share it. Misfit Valentine
A love note to my stalker, who I know will always care: I sense your presence follow close behind most everywhere, It's nice to know there's one thing I can count on, always true: In this world of hills and heartbreak, I at least can count on you. You watch me when I go to work, you watch me when I shower, You leave a dozen roses on my doorstep every hour, You leave me notes around the house, or sometimes in my car, Professing "love, forever," or "I'm never very far." And though you're creepy, and I can't in truth say "please be mine," It's nice to know (if all else fails) you'd be my Valentine.

Hiatus Update
Hey all, still on hiatus here, but at least I'm not dead!  I mean, presumably, I can't be sure though.  I think that'd be the kind of thing one would notice.  I've got a couple of new things I've written that I'll be throwing up here for your delectation and defenestration (no actual defenestration, please, someone might get hurt), but I won't be making regular updates.  At least, not until I change the name on my account (it seemed like a good idea in high school), and I can't do that until I get a premium subscription.  Very early Christmas present, anyone...? If you want to keep up with my non-fiction writing, I'm keeping a blog at insear

On Hiatus
Just a note to whoever cares to know; in between trying to stay caught up with my classes and the fact that my computer is getting so old and senile it takes forty minutes to sync my iPod and check my email, I probably won't be very active here on dA till at least the Summer.  I'll still drop by from time to time, but I won't be commenting much and I almost certainly won't be posting anything.  So, y'know, don't panic, I guess. Stay cool, hope everybody's having a good year!

Sinful Eyes
So, I finally got around to uploading a bunch of pictures I've had sitting around on my hard drive for three years or so.  They're from a trip I took to Japan in high school.  Me and about twenty other students went there for a month, saw the sights, learned the language, did a homestay, etc.  It was awesome. Anyway, in the roughly 24 hours since I started uploading my modest travel pics, my faves have literally doubled.  That means that I've gotten more faves in the past twenty-four hours submitting photos that probably took me a total of 40 hours to take, edit and upload than I have over the past TWO YEARS submitting literature that I've s
