Harry and Ron watched from behind the cloaks as all the teachers came in. Snape was among the last to enter. He looked like he had run all the way from the dungeons. They waited silently for Professor McGonagall to speak. Harry noticed many of the teachers looked pale and even frightened. A moment later, and so was Harry.

With a face the colour of stone, McGonagall spoke. “It has happened. The worst has happened. A student has been taken by the monster into the very Chamber of Secrets.”

One of the teachers gasped.

Harry saw Snape grip the back of a chair like it was a lifeline. “How can you be certain?” he asked, his voice low.
