Description

Detail from a sarchophage lid from Roman Imperial period, late 2nd, early 3rd century AD. Exhibited in Afyon Archaeological Museum, Turkey.

The lid shows a couple reclining on a cline; with love/death asleep with a dog.

Eros (love) was deeply related to hypnos (sleep) brother of thanatos (death). Sleeping child is an allogry of death and sleep but also love between the man and the wife. Here the dog is a way pointer to the underworld with its guard the Cerberos (3 headed dog).
