These are from a series I have dubbed "Second Home". Photographs I took from my last trip in Maui and all that has happened in the past year and a half made me reminisce and think fondly on memories I treasure during my visits to the Hawaiian Islands. I cherish my time there and have visited frequently since I was young, so I have developed a close connection with the islands, thus jokingly calling it a "second home". Many North Pacific Humpback whales, too, treat the islands as a second home. Because the reserve is well protected and less of a risky zone in terms of predators, these Humpbacks migrate during breeding season, which usually begins from December all the way to April to mate.
With this series I have created whale creatures that blend into the Hawaiian landscape as elements other than water. It was a comforting and therapeutic journey working on this series start to finish. Second Home is from a project during a drawing class in the last semester. It helped me convey methods of approaching landscape art, a media I'm not completely confident working in, and adjust an efficient way of working on each piece with creative elements.
I really do miss going to Maui annually, but I hope that someday when things start to calm down I will go back to that memorable place and meet up with the whales once again.
