Tapinocephalus atherstonei by Theropsida Tapinocephalus atherstonei by Theropsida
Dinocephalia
Locality: South Africa
Period: Upper Permian

One of the largest and heaviest dinocephalians, Tapinocephalus probably lived near water edges in small groups. Its thought that tapinocephalids engaged head-butting behavior(they had heavy and thick skulls) possibly for territory or mates.

Dinocephalia
Localidad:Sudafrica
Periodo: Permico tardio

Given that Moschops was actually less than 3 meters long, Tapinocephalus is actually the largest dinocephalian, as well as largest Permian therapsid, known to ever walk the Earth.

the largest Dinocephalia is Anteosaurus(5m length), and one of the largest therapsids

If I remember correctly, anteosaurians were longer-tailed than tapinocephalians, so a longer anteosaur may not be necessarily larger than a shorter tapinocephalian.

the maximum size of a skull of tapinocephalus is 45 cm long would come to 3m body length, and the maximum size of a skull of anteosaurus is 80 cm long would arrive at 5 m - 6m body length

The skull size of Tapinocephalus is actually ~52.5-53.5 centimeters in length.

"The preorbital length is 51-52% of the total median length; the snout is thus short(preorbital length 273 mm)"

Source: L.D. Boonstra, 1956, "The skull of Tapinocephalus and its near relatives"

Based on the SL-BL ratio of Moschops, this results in a ~3.4-meter long creature.

You can look that one up in google scholar if you want it.

Anteosaurus may be longer, but they're more elongate in proportions. Here's the skeleton of the anteosaur Titanophoneus: 2.bp.blogspot.com/_LOpbWIPseDg…

Anteosaurus would of course be much bulkier and much more robust than Titanophoneus, but it's doubtful that this would bridge the bulk gap between anteosaurs and tapinocephalians.

The anteosaurus (5 m or more) vs Tapinocephalus (3.5 or 4 m), so the anteosaurus is the longest of Dinocephalia,
Tapinocephalus is the largest of Dinocephalia
