Love is Love: Anthology Contest

Wed Jun 15, 2016, 6:26 AM

With $50 worth of prizes~

:new: Because this is an art and literature anthology, collaborative works are encouraged, with favor to those works. I'd love to see visual art that flows well with the literature piece beside it. :new:

:new: Two important bits of information added to the rules! :new:

With $50 worth of prizes~

For a while now, I've been wanting to work with my fellow writers to create an anthology - with all the funds going towards a charity. What escaped my mind was the subjects that the anthology should be based on, as well as what charity they would support. Unfortunately, recent events have made the decision for me.

Prompt 1: LGBTQ

Charity: The True Colors Fund

Their mission: Co-founded by Cyndi Lauper, the True Colors Fund works to end homelessness among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth, creating a world in which young people can be their true selves.

Prompt 2: Bullying

Charity: Free2Be

Their mission:
Free2Be is dedicated to engaging in effective advocacy for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people. We are committed to ensuring the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of youth and young adults struggling due to sexual orientation or gender identity issues.
This project is a regional endeavor to address Intimate Partner Violence, Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Bullying, and other forms of violence which damage all of us as individuals and as a society.

You may be asking why we're not donating to Equality Florida or the Pulse Fund. While the victims and their families do need help, this project is donating based on funds from book revenue. The first book is not due to be published until September 1. However, if you would like to donate to the Pulse Fund, they have a GoFundMe.

Rainbow Dot Bullet - F2U! All rules apply to both prompts.
Arrow Bullet (Rainbow) - F2U!
The work submitted must reflect the anthology's theme. (Your character does not have to be LGBTQ. for example, but the subject matter must be clear and fit the anthology.)
Arrow Bullet (Rainbow) - F2U! There is no genre restriction but the work must be appropriate for young adults.
Arrow Bullet (Rainbow) - F2U! No hateful works. Yes, I know one of the themes is bullying. When violence is included, it should reflect how violence affects the community. (This is restrictive, but you have free reign beyond this. How does an abusive family affect a person? How can someone free themselves from violence? How do mass violent actions affect communities?)
Arrow Bullet (Rainbow) - F2U! No more than three works per person.
Arrow Bullet (Rainbow) - F2U! Poetry and prose are accepted for the literature categories.
Arrow Bullet (Rainbow) - F2U! Digital art and photo manipulations are accepted for the cover categories.
Arrow Bullet (Rainbow) - F2U! All visual art forms are accepted for the inner artwork categories.
Arrow Bullet (Rainbow) - F2U! Literature works should not exceed 4,000 words.
Arrow Bullet (Rainbow) - F2U! Book covers should include "Love is Love Anthology", the prompt name as a subtitle, and "Edited by: D. Fayth Raines".
Arrow Bullet (Rainbow) - F2U! Visual art pieces should be 6" x 9" for full page and 6" x 4" for half page. :new:
Arrow Bullet (Rainbow) - F2U! Because works should be considered not previously published, you may either submit your work with a link or upload the piece. However, if you upload it, we will ask you to take it down before publication. :new:

Rainbow Dot Bullet - F2U! Prompt 1: July 31 (Anticipated publication date: September 1)
Rainbow Dot Bullet - F2U! Prompt 2: September 30 (Anticipated publication date: November 1)
Arrow Bullet (Rainbow) - F2U! All categories must submit by the deadline to be considered.

Rainbow Dot Bullet - F2U! All catergories apply to both prompts.
Arrow Bullet (Rainbow) - F2U! Literature - 20 to 25 works will be accepted, depending on length, per prompt.
Arrow Bullet (Rainbow) - F2U! Book cover - 1 work will be accepted, per prompt.
Arrow Bullet (Rainbow) - F2U! Visual art - 7 to 12 works will be accepted, depending on size, per prompt.

Rainbow Dot Bullet - F2U! All categories will be judged by a panel of judges.
Rainbow Dot Bullet - F2U! Literature:

Arrow Bullet (Rainbow) - F2U! nymsaj

Rainbow Dot Bullet - F2U! Judges will decide the winners by the 15th of the following month.

Despite the fact that all proceeds will go towards the two charities, there will be some prizes distributed.
Rainbow Dot Bullet - F2U! All prizes are awarded for both prompts.

Plese Note:

If you submit to this contest, you have the prospect of your work being published in an anthology on Amazon. Only previously unpublished work will be accepted. Writers and artists retain all copyrights but grant exclusive publishing rights for six months after anthology publication. No revenue will be paid to the contributors - all revenue will be donated to the listed charities. I reserve the right to request edits to the works included.

I've been busy with Camp NaNo, but since I just finished my novel and have another 7k to write, I figured I'd write an entry today or tomorrow or something. BUT I STILL DON'T HAVE PROPER INSPIRATION AND IT'S KILLING ME. Just saying to expect an entry right before the deadline, as usual. :lmao:

Edit: Never mind. I wrote the first draft just now, and it's 4,114 words. Lots of editing to do...

I've written something recently that fits the prompt (#1), but not specifically for this - would it still be eligible?
TheRedSephaos Featured By Owner Jun 18, 2016  Student Writer
I have no problem with previously written works! Just keep in mind that if it's posted up, if we include it in the anthology, we'll ask that you take it down before publication.

In that case I'd like to submit "The Witch-Child and the Silent Song".

Not sure if I'm supposed to make a new comment about it, but here's my piece. Not Always a Fairy Tale  I'd appreciate if you'd give your personal opinion on if it's anywhere near what you're looking for and if this would be something I should pursue with my remaining two submissions. Or if I should go a different direction.
TheRedSephaos Featured By Owner Jun 18, 2016  Student Writer
Of course~ I'll be doing a critique on all the pieces. I've got work tonight, but I'll read over it tomorrow.

Will I get to know your thoughts before the end of the contest or only after? I want to be sure it's like what you're looking for, that I didn't misinterpreted the prompt.

Sorry! Have had a busy week! It'll be before the end.
Comic-Ninja-Whoot Featured By Owner Jun 21, 2016  Hobbyist Writer
Thank you so much. And there's no rush. I know a thing or two about being busy. I just wanted to make sure so I wasn't waiting for something that wasn't going to come till after the end.

I wrote a piece for this. How would I submit a piece for judging? Second question, can I submit more than one piece to increase my chances of the judges liking one? And third, can I submit to more than one category or am I locked into the one piece that I submit? That's a lot of questions for one comment so I'll stop there.
TheRedSephaos Featured By Owner Jun 17, 2016  Student Writer
Awesome! Glad to hear you've written a piece~
You can either upload it the or upload it as a deviation with a link in the comments leading back to this journal. Then leave the link to either on the comments of this journal.
You may submit up to three pieces. What categories they are in are your choice. (You could do three written, two written and one visual, etc)
ArynChris Featured By Owner Jun 16, 2016
You say that the works should not be previously published; should they be submitted to an email and/or uploaded hidden to, or is it acceptable to post to dA and submit a link?
TheRedSephaos Featured By Owner Jun 16, 2016  Student Writer
This is something I've been seriously debating. I want you to be able to showcase your work, but also for people to have a reason to purchase the anthology. Why purchase when you can read it all online, other than the fact that it is a donation to charity.
I'll likely be altering the rules soon, so that it'll have to be submitted to or emailed, as it's probably the best option, or uploaded but pulled down or stashed before release date.
