Clearly, I suck - Take 2 by TheRebelWithNoCause Clearly, I suck - Take 2 by TheRebelWithNoCause
I tried to paint another copy of my Skunky sketch.. I think I'm getting the blending thing down better, but now there's no texture or volume to anything. Gr. HELP! I need to learn how to do fur better.. I can't find ANY tutorials or videos on how to do it better.

Here's a photo of the actual dog - [link] - for comparison.

interesting title...

you say you cant find any tutorials on fur. why not hink of the fur as blades of grass. many short strokes layers over each other
if i may ask, what medium are you using?

I've never painted before, so I was having a hard time getting used to it. I was using tempura paint, just to get started. In my first attempt at this, I was trying to paint the fur like it was grass, but I couldn't manipulate the brush correctly. I recently bought special brushes to do the fur better, but I haven't had time to use them yet.

Your blending is very well in this piece, you shouldn't be so hard on yourself. I'm afraid I can't offer any advice on how to help you though... What kind of paint are you using anyways? What if you took a wet fan brush and tried adding some furlines that way? ... I have NOOO idea if that would work or not, just a random thought that came into my head... or maybe using some water'd down paint of the same color to try and add a light bit of texture.... sorry, grasping at straws since I don't paint... >_<

lol I've thought of both of those ideas since I finished the piece. I'm glad someone else mentioned them, though. I plan on going and getting some more and/or better brushes. And, I looked up how others paint online, and most of them add a little water. I use tempera paint, which is cheap lol I just wanted to buy something so I could see how I do.

not sure of what exsactly tempera paint is... I used archlic (sp?) when I did my painting... perhaps you could mix types of paint... in the end I guess its still the same, just keep experimenting. lol

My sister told me that Tempera and Acrylic are very similar. Tempera is what kids usually use in grade school in art class.
