Jim References (November 2017) by ThePurpleGriffin Jim References (November 2017) by ThePurpleGriffin
Happy Veteran's day y'all

Here's a little break from commissions (since that's probably all you've seen for the past few months I think XD)

I really need to fix these mafia references mainly because I've gotten slightly better with poses and the last references had such cluttered palettes and I limited them now pfft xD

So here's Jim's current reference on the left and young Jim on the right :D

Pretty good work on this. It's got a nice and simple style to it. It's pretty good to see these cartoonish styles every now and then, considering most artists tend to go either realistic or semi-realistic, so kudos for the style. Design wise, they're also pretty good. The lines are quite bold, helping give some sort of definition to the character. You also got some good expressions going down, easily making out what they're feeling. The expressions are neither lacking nor exaggerated, a good balance to make them look quite natural.

Now, there are things that could be improved. Their postures are a bit too stiff. For example, the one in the soldier uniform. His shoulders are pushed up, making it give a very stiff look to the character. Compare it to the mafia uniform, when his shoulders are lower, giving a more relaxed and casual feel. It's also with how the characters are standing. Again, with the one with the uniform, he looks as if he's about to fall over with his stance.

Lastly, I would suggest shading. The colors are good, but shading should help further improve the look and give more life to the image.

Overall, this a good piece. Great job on it!

Hey there!
Thank you so much for the critique!! I'll be sure to work on some more poses :D

Oh, and I probably didn't add shading because these are reference sheets and I feel like shading would throw people off when they consider the color pallets (for instance, whenever I find an open species group, the rules/guidelines for reference sheets usually tell you to not place shading on your character reference)- but this is just my opinion. Do you think reference sheets should have shading, though? (I'm just looking for advice from other artists:)

Well, if you're reference sheet is strictly just to show the characters in different angles and positions, I suppose it's not completely necessary. However, I have seen my share of reference sheets in which their characters do have shadows and shading.

hold on, i'm gonna comment on this, let me just leave this tab up on my computer for five days first

i see some people are criticizing the shapes of the guns. i ....... hahaha, i know practically nothing about guns, i don't know how accurate they are. they look like shooty bullety hurty-peopley weapons, so they're good enough. x)

anyway it's really cool that you paid so much attention to the differences here. :) "young" Jim looks more shy, "older" Jim the bird in disguise looks angrier, "young" Jim is a bit skinnier, his head is more "narrow"(?), older Jim's body language shows confidence, etc. really nice!

And thank you!! That's kinda what I was aiming for haha! I'm glad you noticed the little details I put in :D

The Character On The Right Appears To Be Leaning. If You Draw A Straight Line Through The Character While You Work You Should Be Able To Fix That. The Left Character's Gun Looks Oddly Blocky And Chunky And Messes With The Overall 2D Style Of The Piece. Also, The Expressions Show The Personalities Of The Characters And Their Posing Adds To The Contrast Between The Characters.

I Hope This Is Helpful.

Hey there! Thank you so much! I'm glad the expressions and contrasts work well!

Well the thing is, the line of action doesn't necessarily need to be straight- in fact, I've read that it's advisable to keep it curved or serpentine to display rhythm and flow. My older drawings had straight lines of action, so they were more stiff and stale. I chose these poses to make him seem a bit more lively rather than just standing up straight. :)

I'm also working on drawing guns, so thank you for pointing that out! :D

Hey there! Thank you so much! :D
Oh, and the gun on the left is actually a 1908 Luger and the one on the right is an M1 Garand- but I'll be sure to practice drawing guns and their proportions so that it'll be easier to identify them!! :)

I'd love that! I never really rp so I wouldn't know how to do it, but a collab sounds cool. uwu

Mafia stuff is pretty dang cool, I have to say. I'm actually related to multiple Mafia members. Kind of a sterotype, since I do happen to be Italian. :,D

Edit- Lmao I noticed that sounded kind of worrying, they're actually long dead :,D

And bruh that's awesome! XDD I know a few people whose ancestors were Mafia members too yo (I joke around with one of my friends and her nickname is 'the Mob Princess') XD
I'm actually learning more about the Mafia in class too- it's certainly an interesting topic ah !

And XDDD I hope so! ;3
