Line Study 8-23

Description

I followed Marc Brunet's advice and drew with my whole arm instead of resting my elbow on my work table. The lines were more confident, buuut, eh: being confident and being accurate are not synonymous, let's put it like that. In the method's defense, it validated itself when I abandoned doing a one-for-one copy of the original picture, opting instead to mime the rhythm and flow of the lines.

I chose this specific drawing to study because I loved how the hair flowed into these lush ribbons. The pose was a bit tricky; I spent about an hour trying to figure out the angle of the seat--I couldn't decide if the pelvis was tilted backwards or not. Positioning the legs was a grind, because foreshortening obscures so much anatomy! (Something I noticed, forcing my hand to follow the original's artist's shape language, was that they were making the same tapered lines as me, but, they were hiding them by crowning their lines with a fat dot.) The effect is done by delicately applying a traditional ink pen, at least that's my guess. Also I think he/she probably blocks out their clothing folds in triangles.

Iiii want to say the original was referenced (but maybe that's just balm for my tender ego). If that pose was just from memory, then hats off to the original artist, because that kid could easily have been me, rocking back and forth on my seat, staring off into space during "circle time" in elementary school.
