Description
Yeah, here's the thing about this grid. It's reeeally good and simplifying the facial planes; and that's a problem: bc the facial planes aren't THAT simple. Her jaw line doesn't break that sharply into two direction; it slopes much more delicately than that, because, while our skeleton is very rigid, we have fat pads that smooth these natural curves.
It's very important not to underestimate details like that.
And I always learned (or rather keep relearning) that the initial sphere that begins the Loomis method just helps distinguish the planes of the skull; it mostly just helps you get a sense for the general angle of the head. I have to fight the urge to use the circle as a guide later in my process.
This isn't even my general work flow. When I free-draw I make a box; where the face is I make an X using the four corners of the box (that gives me a center line); I make a line above that line, that's the brow line; then I draw a v from the corners of the brow line connecting it to the chin; and that gives me the placement for the mouth, between the two legs of the 'V'. Then I use the chin and mouth and the angle of the skull to figure out the jaw. That's my process; but this grid? Yeah, it's important for when a reference hides its details. It's also useful for when you start shading the facial planes.
