Description
In case anybody wondered, yes: I use references. A lot of references. Almost nothing I draw originates exclusively from my mental library; I'm not a pro, and, sure as hell, I'm no Kim Jung Gi or Frazetta.
For any of the noobies who enjoy my stuff, just remember: you don't have to be a genius to make compelling art. You just need two things (scratch that, make it three!):
1)The ability to draw a box
2)Be a stubborn son of a bitch
3)Stay in your comfort zone
If you can draw a box, you can draw a skull; an eye; a rib cage; a pelvis; a cylinder for the arms and legs, etc. If you can consistently draw, even if it's just spending fifteen minutes a day on something specifically you're trying to learn-- like, say, the anatomy for the lower arm, something like that --if you can do that (and even I can, with my ADD-ravaged brain, even I can do that!) you can build up a habit; drawing like it's just an innate facet of your daily routine. Lastly, staying in your comfort zone-- drawing what you can draw and what you like to draw until you master it (at least "master" it enough) --- doing that will organically broaden and deepen your expertise, and, you'll avoid burn-out. Like I said: if all you can do is draw a box in perspective, then draw it! Draw it until you can make it a ball, because, then, you can make an eyeball! You can make a skull! You can tuit the basic shapes of the human body enough that you can twist-flip upside down the fucker any which way you want without physically drawing boxes to check your perspectives and proportions. You will just know the angles (enough) to draw an anatomically correct pose.
