Table for 10 Chapter 1Chapter 1: A Table of Friends
Duncan kneeled down and sat the young, unconscious woman up against the wall. Her eyes were closed, and her head rested on her shoulder. “Em? Are you alright?” she didn’t respond. Duncan turned his head to Shaun who was standing a couple feet away, his knuckles bloody. “Did you hit her,” Duncan asked angrily.
“oh,” Shaun replied, “yeah. You didn’t expect me to let her go in freely just because she’s your girlfriend, did you?”

New SpringWhy does rain always seem to turn to snow
when I look away?
Just for a moment, my head is turned
and water freezes.
The frost looks beautiful on my window,
the snow is enchanting on the trees,
but I thought spring was coming soon.
winter was in the past,
dripping away from our memories
like cool, clear water
from an icicle.
I stood outside,
comfortable without my jacket on,
and I wished to myself,
I let myself believe,
the cold was gone.
I will see new puddles forming
on the sidewalks outside
and I will take a walk
through the wet snow,
my breath the same colour as the air.
I know that spring will come,
but I won't trust the world to give it to me soon.
I know that things are changing
all around me,
but I refuse to get my hopes up
until the changes are fully here.
Deep in my heart is a vision of summer,
one with a hot sun
and green grass
and flowing water.
I'll let myself wish for a field of flowers,
but not until the ice is all gone.
