Description
Mario: It is not hard to understand why the mario series was a huge influence. The imaginative and cheerful worlds with great controls and fair gameplay cheered my heart up in a time were video games were in their 8bit shoes. The games never tried to tell a deep message or to sell-out. Since the beginning Mario stand for at least one Unique game with new ideas and fun in the jum and run scene. Sure Mario became also a captilaistic sell-out with hundred Mario Partys and sport games, but at least these games are also very creative on a casual game niveau and
compared to the other casual games good.
Mario Sunshine was a let down and made me sceptical, that Nintendo turns into Sega/Sonic Team, but with Mario Galaxy they switched back to innovation and back to the roots.
Duckman Honestly I was never a huge friend of the Klasky-Csupo shows. All shows after Rugrats were high on my dislike list. And till now I HATE Rurats, sorry. But Duckman, their 2nd show after Stressed Eric, was pure gold. It was a smart written show with more adult gags than everything Adult swim splurts out together.
The ugly style was pure win.
I saw the show by accident. While I had a bad insomina, I switche german TV channels and saw this show.
It was a great experience and won my heart.
Elena Street Fighter, 'nuff said. Have not played Street Fighter 3 and Alpha and 4, so far... but I always enjoyed the design of Elena and her movements.
And I have a soft spot for black/ african girls and EXTRAPOINT for white short hair! yumyum
Earthworm Jim The only game on SNES that has challenged the Mario series in quality and succeeded. The zany ideas and characters made this game to an experience for my lifetime. This game was the real reason why I rebought a SNES. Being a riend of TenNapel now has changed some views on him, but he's still high on my love list.
Vivian The paper mario series is one of the games I played years after their release, I sold my N64 and gamecube (yes, I had one) before I had the chance to test them. But luckily the Wii can read Gamecube disks and has the Wiishop
Paper Mario is a proof how innovative Nintendo plays with their stuff.
Captain Smirk A little gag from my site. It is my oldest original character. Well, technically the second one, but my first was a stick figure and i don't count him really.
Smirk is with 20 years a really old haze in my collection of OCs. he followed me in every situation.
It was also a test to see how much you cared for my characters. Few guessed him, but i am not angry.
Pogo Walt kelly's characters were a huge influence on my artists. The most popular is Jeff Smith with his Bone comics. Kelly's linework was and is still one of the best you can find in the artworld. Sometimes I need a whole day to translate the very complicated dialoges
Raven I have a soft spot for emo/goth girls, K?
Popeye I watched my first cartoons at my Grandma's house (rip) and she showed us Popeye. So Popeye is my very FIRST cartoon character I saw in my life.
Beaker My fav Muppet, but there are SO MANY, it was hard to choose one. But I remember that I liked him as a kid when I saw the shows. I was happy when Bunsen and Beaker showed up every time.
Mortadelo F.Ibanez spy duo Mortadelo y Filemon (Clever und Smart in german) was the comic series I read as a kid. They were my first comic charcters. So huge influence.
Moomin The Moomins were a show I really liked as a kid, but then never saw it again. I tried to find it on our local television as a kid, but had no luck. Maybe i was too stupid to read a TV magazine... haha
Last year I discovered the comics and felt back in love again.
Murdoc More a fan of the style than the music, but Gorillaz is an awesome concept that is loveable.
Signor Rossi Rossi is more a representant of Bruno Bozetto. His cartoons followed my childhood and I have not noticed it at all. When I was 20 I realised that all the toons i watched were actually made by him.
lydia Emo/goth girl, K?
Hsien-Ko Actually I like her design a lot and never played the game. I am a bad nerd, am i right?
Rincewind I read all books and have all games.
started with the 2nd game adventure and then read the whole series. Pratchett has a crazy and witty style.
Rincewind was always my fav one. I enjoyed these books the most. Except the australian spoof and sadly it was the last one with Rincewind as the protagonist so far...
Murky I guess he was the hardest of all to guess.
He is the villian from the Rainbow Brite show. YES, Rainbow Brite.
I was 5 when I saw it, but I never cared for the cheerish and always colorful gay people. I really enjoed the bad guys. They were the first villians in my life and cheered for them more than for the ugly girls with their little pillow shit creatures. He hated colors, i did too after this show.
It had a big impact and introduced me into the 80's commercial garbage shows, which I've lost the interest after a while.
Maybe I could thank Murky for being in distance to bright color, but more muddy and earthtoned ones.
Francis Left 4 Dead 1+2 are the games I play a lot lwith friends lately. When I have the chance, I take Francis in paert 1 or Nick in part 2.
Top Cat Believe it or not, but I loved the hanna barbera cartoons before 1970's hippies took over.
Top Cat may not be the best, but i watched it more than flintstones or jetsons, etc...
Ly Rayman 2 stole a lot of my free time in 1996. I enjoeyd it. But after a while I got sick of the overcolored brightness and moved on.
Squidward is actually the only character i like in this show. He IS the show.
Mila Vodello is one of many great characters in Psychonauts. Was hard to chose one, but her nightmare room part was the darkest and most pregnant moments of this game.
Wallace Claymation, 'nuff said. And with a love to detail and charakter that is hard to fin in our soulless industry today.
Morgan LeFlay She is a really cute character and her *SPOILER* was a moment in my game history were I was angry that the creators did that to her, actually.
It never happens often, but Telltale did a good job to make her loveable and that you care for her.
Daffy Looney Tunes, 'nuff said.
Spy Team Fortress 2 is one of my fav games on my PC. I don't play it so much like l4d, but It will be played till the 3rd games comes.
Lupin the 3rd One of the few anime shows I dig and love also stylewise. Castle Caligostro was one of the movies i watched as a kid and cannot count of often I rewatched it.
Plok The most underrated SNES game ever. Not the best and one of the hardest games ever. But the music and ideas were loveable and gave me great hours of fun.
Pink Panther Loved the show by Fritz Freleng. Also the intros of the movie animated by William's did their effect.
Astroboy I saw many Tezuka animes in my childhood. Kimba, astro and some more. Space Firebird was one of my first animeted movies i saw.
Lum Rumiko Takahashi. I am not the biggest fan, but my brother likes her art and her stuff, so it followed me a long time too.
Oblina AAAAh! Real Monsters! The first Klusko show and liked it for being extremly ugly.
It gave me hope that TV and animation still takes risks and is open to various new styles. Sure it has not reached a big audience, but art should not do that anyway.
Cutman Megaman. nuff said. But was only a Megaman 2,3 and 4 kid later games never reached any of my consoles.
Cpt. Haddock Herge. word.
Batman It is hard to avoid him and his deep and also funny shows/stories. kinda obvious that he appears here.
Captain Esmeralda Spacecaptain Harlock. These animes formed my taste in female anatomy. A lot influence also in my female characters.
Rocko Wackiest show ever. Loved it.
When people don't compare me with John K the whole time, then is Joe Murray the next, but here I cannot deny it.
Dexter's lab I am by far no style elitist or unopen for new ways to animate. Genndy really did an awesome job to push his limited forms and elemnts into powerful told and animated shows (for the limits it has set for itself).
Alyx Vance Half-Life 2. Serious the most replayed game in my collection. I guess 30 times?
Freakazoid Do I need to explain it?
Grover Sesame Street was and still is a big show for kids around the globe and no wonder... it is (or was till the shitty red thing took the spotlight in every scene and soccer moms are afraid of cookie monster) hard to not love.
Peanuts The show and the comics have followed me since my elementary school. I loved the movies and I kinda understood Charlie more than the other kids in my class.
Ohn-Face/ Noface/ whatever He is more representant for all Miyazaki movies. They all rule. I took him, because he is a good choice for a 'face' meme
Mojo Jojo Genndy again, and poll result character.
Avatar This show really had a hard time with me in the first season. First I kinda ignored it. Gave it a try and was really dissapointed by the anime/cartoon mix and story.
But I gave it a longer time and it had the biggest impact in a long time. The shows was storywise and characterwise one of the deepest and smartest shows ever.
Asterix The 'Mickey Mouse' of Europe. Sadly he developed into the same Cash Cow like Mickey Mouse and has not showed uo with a decent movie or comic since Goscinny's death. Uderzo knows how to kill his character...
The movies had some bigger impacts on me than the comics, tho.
DarkWing Duck One of the last very well executed shows from Disney. Loved all Villians. The animation changed from episode to episode, but it was the strategy of this time to commish 4 animation studios to animate shows. Tiny Toons, Aladdin, and some more.
:thumb165264397:
Maybe you can also guess which characters I take next.
Just remember that they are NOT from the same universes like already in the pic. Except Vivian... is everyone ONE representant of one show.
These are SOME of the characters which have inspired me since I was a kid. Sure there are MANY characters missing in this piece, but I tried to keep it to a limit (elsewise it would be double the format).
It is a bandwagon piece to this ongoing dA thingie, but I took it a step further.
note 1: 'wizzard' is written correct.
note 2: 'I hate memes' is not my opinion, more a connection to the character's kind of catchphrase.
note 3: The characters resemble the WHOLE series/comic/game, sure there are more characters from the stuff, but I took the one, who had the strongest influence on me ( only Mario, because he was red and it fit to the color choice, elsewise I would have taken Luigi)
